The developers only tell of the “good” that comes from this type of plant, I think it needs to be pointed out that 40 percent of the “unrecyclables” are hormones and other types of prescription drugs along with cold medicines and other unidentifiable material, that’s what goes in the ground and will lay there FOREVER. Hormones and cold medicines are already responsible for the limits on freshwater fish consumption (check DNR data) in Reedy Creek and other rivers and streams in Appling County, so let’s put more in the ground close to Reedy Creek.
After contacting Mr. Jeff Cown (Solid Waste Manager for the EPD) I discovered that it is the “dump” that they have to have approved through the EPD and to do that first they have to have the zoning changed here in Appling County to allow zoning for landfills and then they have to present a Hydrogeological Assessment Study. After speaking with Mr. Cown he directed me to the board of county commissioners stating they are the ones who would open or close the door to this action.
Today we are talking about a community near Reedy Creek, but tomorrow it maybe near the river, Ten Mile area or the City of Graham. Look around you; are there 600 acres of farmland? Tomorrow it could be a dump, as well causing your air and water quality to plummet and the value or your home to drop. I urge you to contact all the county commissioners and the County Manager Lee Lewis at 367-8100, Ext. 1, and he can provide you with the contact number for all of our commissioners. Please let your voice be heard! The next commissioners meeting will be February 7 at 5:30 p.m. Stand up and make a difference!
