Coach Harriet McCoy or more affectionately called, “Mama” by her students and athletes, was honored at the annual Pirate Football Banquet on February 4. Coach McCoy has been the Academic Coach for all sports at Appling County High School since 1993. She has also been on the sidelines of football games during this time performing duties as trainer, equipment manager, and sponsor of the water girls. As “Mama” retires from being active in sports, she vows she will always love the games and more so, the players.
McCoy has been teaching in the Appling County High School System since 1980. She has been coaching at Appling County High School since 1993. McCoy has been distinguished as Assistant Coach of the Year in 2000 by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association (Region 2AAA Football Champions), Special Education Teacher of the Year for the Georgia District 14 in 2006-2007, and Appling County High School Teacher of the Year for 2009.
“Mama” McCoy is the daughter of Evelyn Chauncey and the late Rev. Raymond Chauncey. She has three sons, James (and Ksena) McCoy, Matt (and Erin) McCoy and Tom McCoy.
