Gretchen Miles read the minutes from the October meeting and Elizabeth Dunn read the treasurers’ report, both were approved as read. Joyce Tillman gave an update on Retired Educators’ Sunday and asked everyone to stand who was recognized at their church.
An announcement was made on the local radio station and several businesses announced it on their marquee. Eveline Peacock mailed five sympathy cards and two get well cards since the last meeting.
Elizabeth Dunn thanked the members who helped with “The Georgia Cares” program.
Dana Worth, Director of the Boys and Girls Club, gave an update on the Appling County club. At the present time there are 61 boys and girls enrolled. She is trying to get 100 children, so grants can be received. She asked that retired educators consider volunteering and helping in the afternoon with the homework session. The sessions are one hour for the younger children and 1-1/2 hours with the older children. The average report grades were 91 1/2 for the last reporting period.
The Appling County Middle School Chorus and Show Choir then entertained us under the direction of Karen Davis.
Wanda Ammons drew the winners of the Reborn Dolls. The first winner was Betty McDonald and the second winner was Jamie Varnadore. This was a fundraising project for the Retired Educators. President Buchannan thanked everyone who sold and bought the raffle tickets.
President Buchannan presented the certificate to the group that was presented to her by Superintendent Scarlett Copeland at the November Board of Education meeting. This certificate was for the dedication and hard work that the Appling County Rretired Educators continue to do in the schools and community, and also for recognizing the teachers of the year from each school and the new retirees.
An announcement was made that the high school will be hosting the FBLA region competition in January 2012, and that volunteers are needed to help judge events.
The Appling Co. Middle School Jr. Beta Club prepared the goody bags.
The Christmas meeting will be held December 7.
Mrs. Carolyn McCall blessed the meal and the meeting was adjourned to go to the cafeteria where 52 retired educators enjoyed a delicious Thanksgiving meal prepared by the ladies of the middle school cafeteria.
