GEORGIA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MAP WHICH SHOWS APPLING WILL BE DIVIDED INTO TWO DISTRICTS, HOUSE DISTRICT 156 (NORTHERN APPLING) AND HOUSE DISTRICT 178 (SOUTHERN APPLING).
Maps approved, according to Deal
According to the associated press, Governor Nathan Deal is reporting the Obama administration has approved the new political boundaries in Georgia. Deal spokesman Brian Robinson said the Department of Justice on Friday signed off on the maps for the U.S. House, state Senate and House.
The decision came despite complaints from state Democrats that the maps dilute minority-voting strength. Democrats have pledged to challenge the boundaries in court. But Republicans say the plans increase the number of districts with a majority of black voters.
Lawmakers must redraw legislative and congressional maps every 10 years to line up political boundaries with new U.S. Census figures.
As many may recall, the new maps include Baxley and Appling County being divided basically in half in the Georgia House Districts.
