Eva M. Parker
Eva M. Parker, 92, died Nov. 19, 2011. Mrs. Parker was born Oct. 2, 1919 in Pearson to the late George Williams and the late Channie Williams. She attended Savannah State University and Brewton Parker College where she received her teaching certificate. Mrs. Parker was married to the late Ernest J. Parker. She was a member of Harpers Chapel United Methodist Church where she worked closely with the United Methodist Women and other UMW Chapters throughout the State of Georgia. Mrs. Parker received certificates from the Georgia State Department for the work she had done with the United Methodist Women. She also served on the steward board, class leader, Sunday-School teacher, financial secretary and many other church departments. She was recognized for her accomplishments by being invited to attend the inauguration of Gov. Jimmy Carter in Atlanta as well as being recognized by the Secretary of State Silas Vance, Gov. George Busbee and great words of encouragement from President Jimmy Carter.
Mrs. Parker was a travel agent and traveled abroad at least ninety times. She had great ideas for the betterment and improvement of the community and Appling County at large. She was well known throughout this area and other surrounding counties and cities. “When she spoke people listened.” Mrs. Parker worked very closely with Cancer Society and was one of the founders of the Progressive Resource Center, which is named, the Parker-Harrell building. She was indeed the ambassador for the building where she worked so many hours to secure and renovate. She cherished that Center and will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with her on this project.
Mrs. Parker was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest J. Parker and children, Valencia and Michael Parker, and a brother and two brothers-in-law.
Survivors include one daughter, Marva (Andrew) Ragland, Sr. and one son, Tony Parker, both of Chattanooga, TN; a god son, Bradford Allen; one sister-in-law, Vernelle Moore-Cobern of Fort Lauderdale, FL; nine grandchildren, Mealand (Alonzo) Hudgins of Murfreesboro, TN, John Jackson (deceased), Allen Smalley of Vidalia, Marguerite Newkirk of Chattanooga, TN, Monique (Marcus) Smith of Brunswick, Marlene Parker of Baxley, Rashad Parker and Jamal Parker of Atlanta and Keisha Love of Dublin; 25 great grands, Marcus (Resha) Smalley of Jacksonville, FL, Dominque, Layla, Landesha and Octavia Newkirk of Darien, Marin, Tiffany, Terry, T’Keyah, Rekela, Michael, Tevion, Vanessa, Deonte’ (deceased) of Chattanooga, TN, T’Kayli, Nicholas, Megan, Habibah, and John III of Murfreesboro, TN; ten great-great-grands and a host of family and friends. Mrs. Parker is also survived by childhood friends, Connie Boone, Ardella McCall, Corine Milton and Sarah Moody including special friends, Tommie Jones, Rebecca Ogden and Caroldine Surrency.
Funeral services were held at 12:00 noon Tuesday, Nov. 22 from Harpers Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vicki Scott and Minister Nettie Smith officiating. Interment followed in Old Field Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers were Marlin Fletcher, Oliver Hall, Charles Rooks, Douglas Rooks, Lorenzo Rooks and Thirkield Rooks, Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were Alfred Abramson, Roland Rooks, Norman Rooks, Charles Stripling, Ronald Burkett, Donald Rooks, Raymond Gadsden and members of the Progressive Resource Center.
Musical selections were rendered by Floyd Hunter and Prophetess Jacquetta Edwards.
Arrangements were under the direction of Brown Funeral Home.
