A time to give thanks
Did you know that in 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies? For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.
There are many items in life that we can all be grateful and thankful of including a roof over our heads, food to eat, family, faith and the list goes on and on. However, let’s don’t forget that there are many in this community, across this great land and abroad that will not have the comfort of even a warm meal this Thanksgiving. The News-Banner salutes the Appling County Food Bank and other organizations for their efforts during the holiday season, as well as, each and every day throughout the year.
Let’s also remain vigilant in thought and prayer for our men and women in the Armed Forces fighting to protect our rights and freedoms that allow us to celebrate Thanksgiving freely.
