The long ride up from Georgia on Monday had finally taken its toll. B. J. and I sank into the gentle king size bed and slipped away into dreamland with visions of apple pie and ice cream dancing in our heads.
The night seemed to go too fast. When we awoke, the cushy bed whispered to us, “Hey, it’s a great day for cuddling and ordering breakfast in bed.”
It was tempting. Hating to get up, we stretched and rolled in the pleasant bed. Finally, B. J. arose and pulled the curtain on the big window on her side of the bed. I tumbled out of the land of snooze and wobbled sleepily through the living room, opened the curtain and the big patio sliding door and stepped outside to breathe the fresh, brisk air of the Great Smokey Mountains. The invigorating breeze enlivened me. A hot cup of coffee would soon ensue.
The scene was adorable. Expanding before us was an astounding panorama. Directly below was the attractive sidewalk and shrubbery that surrounded the condominium and bordered the extensive parking area where Big Red snuggled cozily in his stall. Farther out was the golf course and the Little Pigeon River. All this accented by the Great Smokey Mountains in the background. Across the river, helicopters were warming up to fly tourists for sunrise trips over the mountains.
The world famous Apple Barn in Sevierville with all its attractions is, traffic permitting, only about a ten-minute ride from our condo. Sometimes, though, the traffic along the “strip” can resemble the Atlanta By-Pass during rush hour.
I reined Big Red off the strip and onto Apple Valley Lane then turned left and went in search of a hitching rail for Big Red. Although it was early, the crowds were arriving. Hitching rails were disappearing fast. Already several charter busses were unloading their travelers.
We got lucky and found a vacancy in a good location. I nudged Big Red in and tied him up. Excitedly, B. J. and I dismounted. We were ready for a great Day at the Apple Barn.
Although it was early and we had eaten breakfast before leaving the condo, Apple pie and ice cream was strong on our minds. Unable to curb our desires, we headed in that direction.
The tantalizing tang of fresh baked apple pie filled the air and whetted our appetites before we arrived at the bakery. There was a line of hungry folks but it was moving fast. We ordered up and shortly we had platefuls of freshly baked apple pie topped big globs of ice cream. We found a nice table with a good view and dug in. Yum, yum was it ever delicious.
There is much to keep one busy at the fabulous Apple Barn. Two of our favorite places are the Christmas Shop and the Apple Barn and Cider Mill.
After downing our super tasty servings of apple pie and ice cream, we began our tour, which, as you might guess, kicked off at the Christmas Shop.
It is always Christmas at the Apple Barn. It may be July, August, October or Thanksgiving but when you enter the Christmas Shop, you are whisked into the world of Christmas. There are colorful, glistening Christmas decorations of every variety; it is amazing! B. J.’$ eye$$$ were glittering too. She likes to buy new $$$tuff every Christmas to add to her collection.
In time, she commented. “I know that Rita and Nelda will want to come here when they get here so I will finish shopping when we come with them. Let‘s put our stuff in the car and go on over to the Apple Barn and Cider Mill.”
At that point, I was out of control. There was nothing else to do but comply with B. J.’$$ wishes.
The Apple Barn and Cider Mill is a big three-story ornate barn with enough do-dads, arts and crafts, foodstuffs and other such paraphernalia to keep one occupied for a day. B. J. likes to take her time and plunder the Apple Barn thoroughly. I just tag along with “Yeah, I like that. Those are pretty,” ad infinitum.
From top to bottom, B. J. was utterly absorbed in rummaging through the Apple Barn’s store when a faint odor tickled my nose. It grew stronger and I could tell that it was coming from the Applewood Farmhouse Restaurant. Even though we had pigged out on apple pie and ice cream, the fragrance from the Applewood was taking priority.
It was time to sample the fundelicious cuisine served up by this excellent eatery. B. J.’s shopping was about to enter an intermission.
