The Appling Christian Academy Volleyball team has captured its first State Championship. In a two-day tournament held in Hampton, the Lady Eagles played very hard against tough teams from the Atlanta area.
Appling Christian Academy was definately the “rookie” team at the state tournament. Many of the Atlanta area schools have had successful volleyball programs for a number of years. Appling Christian is only in its third year of its volleyball program.

ACA Vollyball Team captures first GCAA State Championship
However, this was definitely not evident by the quality of play and the amount of fight that the Lady Eagles showed they had in them. Seniors Lindsey Johnson, Christin Beasley, and Mary Bartido lead the Lady Eagles with strong serving and tough play at the net. Their presence at the net proved to be very intimidating to spikers of opposing teams. Deanna Johnson, a 5’11” sophomore at ACA, helped the Lady Eagles capture this title with strong blocking and spiking at the net as well as her backcourt play. Victoria Cox and Alyssa Fernando, also sophomores, were integral to the victory as they worked very hard setting the ball for the strong spikers.
Their heart and hustle in getting to balls that could have been winners for the opposing teams began to add up and tip the balance for the Lady Eagles. Also, playing a key role in the victories was Lauren Beasley, who although only in the eighth grade, stepped up to the challenge when needed and gave all she had for her team. The MVP for the tournament was team captain, Lindsey Johnson. Congratulations to the 2011 GCAA Division II State Champions!
