By Lester Weldon, President Appling County Food Bank
While attending a pastor’s conference at Moody Bible in Chicago, a man on the street approached us asking for assistance. He felt that five would make a difference in getting food to eat and affect his life for the day. I am thinking of the Appling County Food Bank and what a difference ‘five’ would make. But the five is not in monetary terms, but one of our most valuable assets, “Time.”
Over the past twelve months the Appling County Food Bank has received 2,353 applications for food. During this time we have given away 205,569 pounds of food and have spent $31,237. We have seen an increase, already, for the past 9-1/2 months of nearly 200 applications for food, over the past year.
The volunteers, who include a wide range of people with various backgrounds have diligently served the community in procuring and distributing food to families in emergency situations. The Appling County Retired Educators have led the way in showing the volunteer spirit. We have had business and civic leaders, farmers, churches and retirees from Plant Hatch, and various other individuals to volunteer, making it possible for the Appling County Food Bank to be totally a volunteer, non-profit organization. We could not have operated for the past nine years without our volunteers.
The Food Bank has been supported by the outstanding citizens of Appling County. Through contributions by individuals, churches and organizations the Food Bank has been able to serve the community well. The grants given by the Emergency Food and Shelter and United Way have been of tremendous support. The majority of food has come through, America’s Second Harvest. The local business community, Harvey’s, Pizza Hut and Wal-Mart, through the program “Feeding America,” have allowed the local food bank to add a greater dimension to serving families in crisis, their support in food donations, have helped many local families in Appling County.
The area that is now one of our great concerns, due to the increased demand, is our volunteer base. What the food bank needs is for people that can give five hours a day, one day a week. The Appling County Food Bank is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. We are in need of people in varying skills: to take applications, to fill orders, to load/unload food, and people with basic computer skills. We want to build teams that can give five hours on either of these given days. To get an application or set up an interview time to volunteer call 366-FOOD or 366-3663.
