Thefts, arguments top Baxley Police report
The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department over the past few days.
October 4, at approximately 4:56 p.m., answered a call to Fair Street in reference to a person that was trespassing. On arrival the resident told officers that while he was in his home a female subject walked up behind him in the kitchen area. The female stated she wanted to move in and then she wanted to borrow his truck. The female wanted to use his phone and afterwards she left. Officers, after getting a description of the female, left the home and searched the area where they located the subject. After a brief interview the female subject, who was indentified as Mary Carter, age 23, of a Fair Street address, was placed under arrest for one count criminal trespass.
Oct. 5, at approx. 7:12 a.m., answered a call to the Dairy Queen in reference to a theft. On arrival the owner told officers she had a theft and after reviewing the security video, discovered the identity of the suspect. Arrested in connection with this incident was Walter Thomas, age 56, of Baxley, on charges of one count theft by taking.
Oct. 7, at approx. 10:49 a.m., answered a call to Dwain’s IGA in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the manager that had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. Arrested in connection with this incident was Gregory Leon Ellis, age 47, of Baxley, on charges of one count theft by shoplifting.
Oct. 7, at 10:00 a.m., officers assisted agents of the Altamaha Drug Task Force and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office in executing a search warrant at a residence on Avery Lane. Officers maintained security for the agents while they served the warrant.
Oct. 8, at approx. 4:40 p.m., met with the property owner at a Jones Street address in reference to damage to property. On arrival the owner told officers that a Farmer’s Furniture delivery truck had misjudged the clearance and collided with the corner of the top of the porch. The top of the truck had to be cut to free it from the porch to keep from causing further damage.
Oct. 10, at approx. 8:22 a.m., answered a call to Appling Christian Academy in reference to a burglary. On arrival the officers met with the complainant who related to them that an unknown person(s) had entered the school through a window and rummaged through several rooms and desks. Nothing was reported missing at report time.
Oct. 10, at 6:02 p.m., answered a call to Citi Trends in reference to a theft. On arrival the officers met with the clerk that had a subject detained for taking some items without paying for them. The officers patted down the subject before transport and discovered a screwdriver in his pocket. The screwdriver was used to remove the security tags from the clothing items. Arrested in connection with this incident was Alex Maurice Bennett, age 31, of Broxton, on charges of one count each of theft by shoplifting and possession of tools for commission of a crime.
Oct. 11, at approx. 3:15, met with a complainant at the police station in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that her purse had went missing from her vehicle sometime over the past day. The purse was described as long and brown in color, and it contained her personnel papers, along with assortment of cards and papers.
Oct. 12, at approx. 8:26 a.m., met with a complainant at a North Blvd. address in reference to property damage. On arrival the complainant told officers that person(s) unknown had removed two air conditioner units from the vacant building. One was gray in color and the other was brown.
Oct. 14, at approx. 6:32 p.m., met with the clerk at the Baxley Beverage North in reference to property damage. On arrival the clerk told officers that person(s) unknown had damaged their sign in front of the business and knocked out a spot light on the sign.
Oct. 14, at approx. 3:30 p.m., met with a complainant at Wal-Mart parking lot in reference to a theft. On arrival the complainant told officers that while he was inside person(s) unknown had removed a climbing stand out of the back of his 2003 GMC Sonoma truck. The climbing stand is described as an API Grand Slam climbing stand with one of the straps torn.
Oct. 15, at approx. 9:03 p.m., answered a call to a Lakeview Drive address in reference to a domestic dispute. On arrival officers discovered that a domestic argument had turned physical between a father and a son, involving a gun and a knife, over a custody issue. As a result of the altercation, the father received several lacerations to the head and chin area. The aggressor then fled the area on foot. The EMS unit was called to the scene, where the father was treated and released. A lookout was posted to other units for the aggressor to be detained for further investigative purposes. In a short period of time the aggressor, Gregory Brett Morris, age 32, was taken into custody without further incident. Morris had been charged with one count of burglary, cruelty to children and aggravated assault.
Oct. 16, at approx. 4:46 p.m., answered a call to Danny’s Billiards and Game Room in reference to a burglary. On arrival the owner told the officers that during the night person(s) unknown had gained entry into the building through a rear door. The owner thought the surveillance cameras had scared them off. Nothing was reported missing at report time.
