The News-Banner received the following release from Dennis Madison, Vice President of Plant Hatch, this past week concerning the release of tritium at the nuclear power facility:
“At the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant – safety is priority one. That includes the safety of our employees, plant and most importantly, the safety and health of your families and you.
Hatch identifies underground line as source of tritium leak
“We take our responsibility as stewards of the environment very seriously, that is why when we first detected an increase in tritium levels on our plant site, we immediately took aggressive action to locate and stop the on-site tritium leak – and that is what we have done. At no time was there ever an impact to health and safety of the public.
“Through our robust Groundwater Monitoring Plan we successfully identified one underground line that was the location of the tritium leak. The line has been capped and is no longer in use. Also through our testing and monitoring, we learned no other lines were affected and no other leaks exist. There has been no increase of tritium on or off-site.
“There are plans in place now to safely replace the line, and we will do so while continuing to provide safe, reliable electricity from both units at Plant Hatch.
We are committed to the safety of our communities, and we thank you for your support.”
