On October 28-29, the Baxley Lions Club will sponsor a full-scale Professional Cowboy Association Rodeo at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. There will be Bareback Bronc Riding, Steer Wrestling, Calf Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Cowgirls’ Breakaway Roping, Women’s Barrel Racing, Team Roping and Bull Riding. There will also be two children’s events: the Calf Scramble and the Stick Horse Race.
Any old cowhand will tell you that when it comes to a stick horse race, a homemade one made from an old broom or mop and some creativity and imagination can run just as fast as any fancy-schmancy, city-slicker, store-bought plush-toy thoroughbred that makes horsy sounds. But if you want one of the latter, you can get it at the Baxley Dollar General store. At least you’ll know you LOOK GOOD whether you win or lose! The Lions Club will have some makeshift horses for you to ride if you forget to bring your own horse from home. Only cowhands aged seven and under can enter this event, but they must ride a “horse” to win. All children who participate will receive a sticker that says, “I rode a horse in the Baxley Lions Club Rodeo, October 28-29.”
Gold Sponsors for the rodeo are Woody Folsom Automotive, Leggett Metal Buildings and Gardner’s Apiary. Silver Sponsors are: Appling Medical Group, County Farm Plant Company, Edgar’s Studio, Excelsior Ambulance, Southeastern Gin and Peanut/Altamaha Oil, and The Baxley News-Banner.
All proceeds from the rodeo will go directly to the benevolent projects of the Baxley Lions Club. The major concern of Lions Clubs International is visual impairment and blindness prevention and care. The Lions Club motto is: We Serve.
