Joseph L. “Short” Crosby, 89, died Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in Carl Vinson Medical Center in Dublin. Mr. Crosby was a native and lifelong resident of Appling County and was born Feb. 1, 1922 to the late Lyman and Minnie Carter Crosby. He was a member of Satilla Baptist Church. Short was a World War II U.S. Army survivor – POW. He was a farmer until the age 89 and an avid gardener. Short liked growing in which he enjoyed giving away and loved his roses. Mr. Crosby was preceded in death by his wife, Marcell Crosby and a granddaughter, Tina R. Crosby.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Randall Odum of Baxley and Pam and Brookie Carter of Brunswick; one son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Kristin Crosby of Baxley; five grandchildren: Kim Powers, Daniel Carter, Keisha Williford, Ammie Ledford and Robin Berrigan; 13 great-grandchildren: Ryne Powers, Jayson Powers, Nate Williford, Ben Williford, Ethan Carter, Susan Carter, Alexis Gonzalez, Chelsie Crosby, Jasmine Crosby, Evan Ledford, Emma Ledford, Jackson Berrigan and Libby Berrigan.
Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 5 at Satilla Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Davis officiating. Eulogy was given by Robyn Berrigan. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers were grandsons: Ryne Powers, John Ledford, Jamie Williford, Juan Gonzalez, Daniel Carter, Jay Powers, Jayson Powers and Tim Berrigan.
Honorary pallbearers were Wayne and Helen Jones, Talmadge and Marsha Varnadore, Curtis and Linda Stallings, Don Hazelden, Jones Haselden, Bill Hyers, Tina Clements, Doc Stallings, Dennis Crosby, Chad and Theresa Bullard, James and Linda Cox and all others in attendance.
Musical selections were rendered by Wanda Smith, Tammy Nix and Lafayette Crosby.
Arrangements were under the direction of Swain Funeral Home.
Mr. Short my you rest in peace and thank you for the service you provided your country and the kind words you shared with a stranger.
