District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces that on August 18, an Appling County jury found 62 year old Willie Gene Heller of Baxley guilty of one count of possession of cocaine. Superior Court Judge E.M. Wilkes presided over the trial and sentenced Heller to twenty (20) years in prison followed by ten (10) years probation under the recidivist statute as a repeat offender.
Assistant District Attorney Jan Kennedy presented the case for the State and Daveniya Fisher and Kimberly Copeland represented the defendant. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank Officer Kyle McNeal and the Altamaha Drug Task Force for their investigation on the case.
The jury was chosen on Monday, August 15 and heard evidence on Wednesday before delivering a verdict Wednesday afternoon. The District Attorney’s Office would like to thank the jurors for giving of their time and service on this case.
District Attorney Jackie Johnson further announces the guilty plea and sentencing of 44-year-old Calvin Smith of Baxley on August 15. Smith pled guilty to one count of kidnapping and one count of aggravated battery. Superior Court Judge E.M. Wilkes accepted the defendant’s plea and sentenced him to twenty-five (25) years to serve in prison followed by ten (10) years on probation.
District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces the guilty plea and sentencing of 26-year-old Rocky Wayne Jacobs of Baxley on August 15. Jacobs pled guilty to one count of robbery by sudden snatching and one count of theft by taking. Superior Court Judge E.M. Wilkes accepted the defendant’s plea and sentenced him to six (6) years to serve in prison followed by fourteen (14) years on probation.
Additionally, the following pleas were accepted by Judge E.M. Wilkes:
- Jeffery Carter pled guilty to two counts of theft by conversion. Carter was sentenced under the first offender act to five (5) years probation, $1000.00 fine, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $1,992.00.
- Danielle Shree Herrington pled guilty to one count of identity fraud and was sentenced under the first offender act to five (5) years probation, $1,500.00 fine and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $311.52.
- Kaycie Nicole Copeland pled guilty to four counts of burglary and was sentenced as a first offender to fifteen (15) years probation, $1,000.00 fine and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $22,872.00.
- Matthew Blake pled to two counts of arson and was sentenced to fifteen (15) years probation concurrent for each count, $2,500.00 fine each, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $20,702.00.
- Giavannie Alexis Carter pled guilty to battery and received twelve (12) months probation, $500.00 fine, and ordered to have no contact with the victim.
- Sabrina Carter pled guilty to three counts of theft by taking. Carter was sentenced as a first offender to ten (10) years probation, each count concurrent, ordered to serve 300-365 days in a Probation Detention Center, pay a $2500.00 fine, and ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $60,090.97. Carter also pled guilty to two counts of theft by conversion in an unrelated case and was sentenced to serve five (5) years probation concurrent.
- Johnny Eugene Bryant pled guilty to one count of burglary and was sentenced as a first offender to five (5) years probation and ordered to pay a $1000.00 fine and restitution in the amount of.
- Corey Rooks pled guilty to one count of Aggravated Assault and was sentenced to three (3) years prison followed by twelve (12) years on probation.
- Lori Turner Diamond pled to guilty to two counts of reckless conduct and was sentenced to 12 months probation consecutive to each other, $500.00 fine, and ordered to follow recommendations of mental health counseling.
- Erika Lynn Green pled guilty to possession of cocaine and was sentenced as a first offender to 5 yrs probation and ordered to pay a $2000.00 fine
- Susie Blake pled guilty to two counts of arson, each sentenced to fifteen (15) years probation concurrent, $2500.00 fine, and restitution in the amount of $20,702.00.
