During a called meeting held on Thursday, August 11 the Appling County Board of Commissioners had discussion on the request to drain Lake Mayers in order for repairs and maintenance to docks. County Attorney Bob Highsmith informed the commissioners that the lake was built for public access and lowering the lake would not be in the best interest of the public. The commissioners were also informed that the local extension agency did not have any need for the lake to be lowered. After the discussion commissioner Sarah Boatright made a motion to not lower Lake Mayers, with a second being made by commissioner Theodore Wilkerson. The motion was approved in a split vote with Boatright, Wilkerson, Ronnie Rentz and Jasper Tomberlin voting in favor and Charlie Leggett voting against the measure.
