M. J. Van Winkle
M. J. (Rip) Van Winkle, 68, of Olney, MD, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was born in Upper Darby, PA, the son of Mary Fielding Van Winkle and George Milton Van Winkle. A graduate of Bloomsburg (PA) University, Mr. Van Winkle moved to Montgomery County, MD in 1965 where he taught math for 35 years; five at Leland Jr. High School in Bethesda and thirty at Thomas Wootton High School in Rockville.
Mr. Van Winkle was a member of the college’s varsity tennis team. He continued his love of the game at Wootton, where he coached both men and women’s tennis teams to many award winning seasons. He was named Montgomery County Tennis Coach of the Year twice by the Montgomery County Association of Coaches. He also took an active supporting role in many of the other athletic programs at Wootten.
In addition, he will be remembered as a Scout Leader, member of Isaac Walton League of America, a homeowners’ association leader, an avid hunter, a loving husband and father and a perpetual jokester.
He is survived by his wife of more than 41 years, Polly Tomberlin Van Winkle; his children, Heather and Brian Van Winkle and his mother-in-law, Edna Tomberlin, all of Olney; his sister, Mary Ellen (Joseph) O’Brien, Wilkes Barre, PA; his brother, Rex (Kathy) Van Winkle, West Chester, PA; two nieces, Bridget (Ken) Ermlich, West Lake, OH and Mary Ellen (Will) Mitchell, Spring Valley, OH; and a great niece and a great nephew also survives.
