Superintendent of Scarlett M. Copeland reported that school in Appling County had a great beginning. School for students in grades kindergarten through twelfth began on Tuesday, August 9. Excitement was in the air for all students, parents, and school staff. Pre-kindergarten students will begin school on August 23.
This enthusiasm was preceded by Preplanning, which was conducted from August 3 - 8. Staff members worked diligently in order to prepare for the students and parents arrival. Principals met with their staff members on August 3 to complete requirements for beginning school. On August 4, a countywide meeting was held with all schools and the superintendent at the Fine Arts Center at Appling County High School. Prior to this meeting, First Baptist Church and Pastor Keith Alderman graciously supplied the entire school system with breakfast. At the countywide meeting, Pastor Alderman delivered the inspiration, and State Teacher of the Year for 2011 Pam Williams was the keynote speaker.
Open House for students and parents was conducted on Monday, August 8, for grades kindergarten through twelfth. Superintendent Copeland stated that she and her Assistant Superintendent Dr. Sandy Dominy were able to attend all Open Houses and each school was impressive in their preparations. The superintendent stated that principals and staff members are to be commended for their exceptional planning. Copeland also added that participation among parents and grandparents was extremely high and this speaks volumes of their interest in education in Appling County.
“Our first week of school has been completed and we are off to a great start in Appling County Schools!” exclaimed Copeland. “ High expectations have been set for students and staff and the results of these elevated standards will produce great outcomes in education.”
Copeland also commended the community for partnering with the school system. “Together, the city, county, schools and parents make a tremendous difference for our students in Appling County. We are looking forward to a bright new year filled with opportunities for growth, learning, and partnerships that will yield the very best educational journey for all students in our county.”
