What kind of seed are you sowing? Did you sow a good seed today? We must be careful of what seed we sow, (good or bad). Helping others, for the same people you meet going up you might meet them on your way back down. So we must be careful how we treat, meet, and greet people. For God is watching.

On May 6, I went to a local supermarket to buy a few items and wrote a check to pay for them. The cashier informed me that my check was denied, no reason given. I paid for my items and went to my bank.

Dear Editor,

Huge thanks and appreciation to everyone who participated in the Walk For Jesus this past Saturday, May 4. It was a dreary, rainy day but in spite of the weather about 40-50 Christians turned out to walk in the rain for their Lord and King. Others who couldn’t walk rode in vans provided by First African Baptist Church.

Have you ever taken the time to think we actually can hurt one another with our mouths? I always said if you cannot say nothing good about somebody learn to keep your mouth shut. We have 365 days in a year to take life one day at a time, but we would rather tend to somebody else’s business. There are a lot of busy bodies. You can look around you, and you can find busybodies.

Coming together is the beginning. Working together is a process, staying together is a success, and yesterday is history. Tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a blessing. When will we see the light? We are living in darkness, blind and cannot see. We all hear the same sound; we look up and see the same sky, cry the same tears. Our feelings and emotions are the same, yet there is hate, violence, intolerance and confusion. We don’t try to understand each other or realize we all have the same basic needs. No matter who we are – color, race, or gender.

Overcome with pets left on Howard Brannen Road

To the Citizens of Appling County,

This letter is in reference to the unwanted pets that are left on our property and road, Howard Brannen Road. As many of you know, the animal shelter is located at the end of Howard Brannen Road. We are continuously having people drop off their unwanted pets on our properties or at the end of the road. We have no control of the animal shelter nor the hours and cannot continue to have unwanted pets left loose. I had someone drop of two puppies and left them in the box of my truck…this is ridiculous! When these unwanted pets are left on Howard Brannen Road, Animal Control will NOT, pick them up, because we are NOT in the city, therefore, we are burdened with unwanted pets. If you do not want your unwanted pets, please contact the Baxley Police Department (Animal Control) so they can guide you on how to have your unwanted pets picked up. All of the residents on Howard Brannen Road will greatly appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Responds to Grand Jury findings

Dear Editor,

It was with great interest that I read your January 23 report on the Grand Jury’s finding in the shooting death of Cpl James M. Dixon III. After thinking about this case for more than a year, I agree with the Grand Jury, and presumably, the GBI findings. Simply stated, James was holding a gun. He would not, or more likely could not surrender his gun so the use of deadly force was justified. Note, however, that the term “justified” is not synonymous with “necessary” or “morally correct” or “humane.” There are still many unanswered questions in this case. Among them are: Did the sheriff determine that his entire department was incompetent to handle one man armed with a shotgun? Did the sheriff have any non-lethal systems at his disposal? Why, after talking to James face to face, did the sheriff walk away and turn him over to SWAT? Did James threaten to harm anyone? If it had been the sheriff’s child instead of James, would he have walked away? I understand that the snipers are trained to shoot only to kill: is their policy “Surrender or die”?

Dear Editor,

District 8 Honor Band was held at Epworth by the Sea Thursday through Saturday, January 31 - February 2. My daughter, a ninth grade band student from Bacon County, was excited about her first high school Honor Band experience.
That excitement was quickly dimmed however, when she was treated as an unwelcomed interloper by the cabin mates to which she was assigned, all girls from a county I won’t name here.
