“The corn will be ready tomorrow morning,” my Mother said. I knew the only answer I could give was “Yes, Ma’am.” Everyone knows sweet corn, time, and the tide wait for no man. When it is ready, it is ready. If one waits too long, the corn will be hard. It is only just right for one day and Miss Myrtle will brook no insubordination or whining about a business meeting that day or a death in the family. All things must be put off when the corn is ready and corn, when ready, takes center stage at Vickers Still.

A time to live

A timer sits in front of me and eats the seconds away, crunching into my day and my life, reminding me that time is relentless, ticking away as life moves along. It stops for no man--no woman either. During the crises of life it seems to slow down for sorrows and the sorrows never seem to end. The rapturous seasons of life fly right by us, but really, time is just marching steadily along—never changing. It’s a baby crawling on the floor searching for pennies to cram into its mouth. It’s a teenager driving the restored, candy-apple red ’66 Mustang and picking up the brown-eyed girl for a movie. Time is a man kissing his wife as he leaves for the office and putting macaroni and cheese on his table before rushing off to coach little league. All too soon it’s a man snoring in his recliner, remote in hand and cat in lap, flipping through the endless channels and finding only nothing. It’s a hearse parked at Omega Cemetery and a weeping family. Time needs no one and is totally sufficient unto itself, marching steadily toward eternity.

The Smokey Mountain Train

B. J. and I are veteran train riders. We have ridden the exciting Dollywood Express at Pigeon Forge a number of times. The thrilling two-day trip on the awesome Alaska Railway from Fairbanks to Anchorage with a layover in the spectacular Denali National Park was indeed an extraordinary experience worth repeating. I rode a train in Mexico from Creel to Chihuahua City while on a mission trip there (B. J. wasn’t with me on that one). Our most recent train excursion was aboard the Smokey Mountain Train in the Great Smokey Mountains of Western North Carolina.

What kind of seed are you sowing? Did you sow a good seed today? We must be careful of what seed we sow, (good or bad). Helping others, for the same people you meet going up you might meet them on your way back down. So we must be careful how we treat, meet, and greet people. For God is watching.

On May 6, I went to a local supermarket to buy a few items and wrote a check to pay for them. The cashier informed me that my check was denied, no reason given. I paid for my items and went to my bank.

The friendly skies

I hate to fly but my wife and I walked into Jacksonville International Airport last Thursday morning at 3 am. It was 73 degrees. I checked our luggage and told the handler I had a pistol in one bag, all legal, of course, unloaded and in a locked box and all that. Then we had to go through the body scan and Anne went through first, then me. I shut the place down as buzzers and bells went off. They took me aside and swabbed a white cloth patch across my hand. I knew I was in trouble right then because I had test fired the pistol earlier that morning. Sure enough, more buzzers went off. When I finally got out of wrist bracelets and leg shackles, I was allowed to proceed. When I finally found Anne, she pretended not to know me, even going so far as to swap seats with someone else so I could not sit with her. That is until we got to Sioux Falls later that day. Then she was proud to know me again.

Remembering Cardy Edmundson

I had heard of Cardy Edmundson and had met him at Annual Conferences and various places around the Conference. He was quite well known in the South Georgia Conference, had a reputation for being a faithful and dedicated servant of the Lord. He was a busy District Superintendent but he always had the time to shake hands and smile and say an encouraging word.

The unending attack on Christianity reaches military

As I listened to retired U.S. Army Staff Sargent and member of the singing group 4Troops Ron Henry share his testimony at Mayor Steve Rigdon’s annual Prayer Breakfast, held last Thursday on the National Day of Prayer, it was evident how God has worked through this soldier’s life. Henry shared an emotional experience of how he and other soldiers came under fire from insurgents with AK-47s at close range while traveling in a vehicle. As the shots rang out Henry stated he immediately began to ask for God’s protection and added that not one soldier in the military vehicle was harmed. To me, that’s evidence enough that God hears the prayers of the righteous.

New friends, old friends

I was in the grocery store the other day when I felt the presence of a Spirit from my youth. I turned around and caught Jerry Lee Braswell sneaking up on me. He started laughing and grabbed my hand and we embraced like the friends we are. Jerry Lee is only one of the many black men this white man respects and knows well.

Doctor’s Visit

Expectantly, he sat on the examining table gazing at the door with steady, unblinking eyes. The smell of antiseptic hung in the air, and a male assistant stood beside him to make sure the elderly patient didn’t fall. A scale waited directly in front of him to report on his eating habits. A variety of pill bottles, some horse-sized and some much smaller, sat on a shelf beside the roll of gauze. He could hear the receptionist who’d greeted him as he came in talking on the phone down the hall.

Into the Alaska Wilderness

Twenty-one hours of daylight in Alaska makes it difficult for a south Georgia couple to discern between “early” and “late.” However, B. J. and I excitedly rolled out of our comfortable king size bed at the pleasing Fairbanks Westmark Hotel at 5:00am. We pulled back the heavy smut black drapes to observe the sun shining outside.

Dear Editor,

Huge thanks and appreciation to everyone who participated in the Walk For Jesus this past Saturday, May 4. It was a dreary, rainy day but in spite of the weather about 40-50 Christians turned out to walk in the rain for their Lord and King. Others who couldn’t walk rode in vans provided by First African Baptist Church.
