I have heard a number of comments made about this newspaper and yours truly the past several weeks that are unwarranted or straight out inaccurate.

I have personally been accused of not doing enough with regard to reporting or for not offering an opinion of my own about the recent shooting that tragically took place in our county involving Marine James Dixon, the Appling County Sheriff’s Department and the Georgia State Patrol SWAT Team. From my vantage point, this has been one of the most divisive issues I’ve ever witnessed in our community. [Full Story »] 

Chickens, saggers and eagles

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m noticing more extreme saggers -- you know the fashion of wearing one’s pants down below the butt line where everyone can see their underwear -- because the weather is warmer.

Saggers say it’s just fashion. They say it’s their way of rebelling against societal norms (who are you to tell me what to wear? I’ll show you by parading around in my underwear). That makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? [Full Story »] 

Great news for county schools

Lies. Violations. Secrecy.

These are a few of the contributing factors that landed the Appling County School System in hot water with the Southern Association of Colleges of Schools and ultimately led to the system’s accreditation being placed on probation in 2010. Probation…just one step from total loss of accreditation. Had the community lost accreditation, the children of this community would have suffered dire consequences. [Full Story »]

I would like to re-share some information with readers, which was first presented in this newspaper by former Editor and Publisher Max Gardner, about a particular class of people that will be revealed later in this editorial.

Some 117 members have run at least two businesses each that went bankrupt, often leaving business partners and creditors holding the bag. Seventy-one of them have credit reports so bad they can’t get an American Express card (but as members, they get a Amex card without a credit check). [Full Story »]

Super Tuesday is over. Did it ever really live up to the hype repetitively provided around the clock by television pundits? I’d say in Georgia the pre-hype did not live up to expectations. There are roughly 5.7 million registered voters in Georgia. Just barely over one million voters showed up to vote in last Tuesday’s Presidential Preference Primary. Not even 20 percent. Take a gander at the receipt on the right. Notice anything unusual? Cold-water lobster, porterhouse steak, and a 24-pack of soda for good measure. Sounds like a great dinner, right? Have you noticed the circled area yet?

That’s right. Food stamps bought this $141.78 meal. Your tax dollars helped give several people a great meal; one fit for a king you might say. [Full Story »]

A presentation given by Superintendent Scarlett Copeland at the Appling County Board of Education work session meeting, held Monday, Feb. 13, was an eye-opener. Copeland showed how state funding for education continues to dwindle. [Full Story »]

About five or six years ago when my parents were getting ready to retire, I decided to replace the ageing roof on The News-Banner’s building. My dad and I discussed several options including going back with a tar and rock-type roof or go with a modified-type roof, which would be lighter on the building’s structure and more energy efficient. I opted to go with the modified roof, even though the tar-type roof held up for over 25 years. [Full Story »]

Two directors?

At a called meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, members of the Appling County Board of Commissioners voted to do something a little unusual. On a split vote the commission voted to hire a second public works director. Tommy Davis currently holds the position and the county expends approximately $50,000.00 on his annual salary. It is understood that both positions would have equal authority. [Full Story »]
