Is America worth trying to save? Save from what you might ask. Is America worth saving from self-destruction? Maybe that’s a better question to ask.

Civilizations have risen and fallen through the ages. Countries have been birthed and countries have died. I believe the United States of America was birthed by the God of the Bible primarily for the purpose of advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ both here and around the world unlike any other country in history. Last April this newspaper started a paper recycling program through SP Recycling at our office. At the same time, SP Recycling entered into a partnership with the Appling County School System, the City of Baxley and the Appling County Commissioners to provide recycling containers at schools and various public locations within the community. To support or not to support…that is the question

There are varying opinions on the state’s attempt to let Regional Commission Districts across Georgia collect a regional Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (also known as The Transportation Act of 2010 or T-SPLOST) for transportation projects. Some support the measure and some oppose. Ultimately the voters in each region across the state will decide. [Full Story »]

There is no doubt that our country needs health care reform in some manner and I do respect President Obama and congress for at least giving it a shot. However, I have been opposed to portions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) for one major reason. That one sole reason…the individual mandate. [Full Story »]

I’ve stated several times over the past few months that I believe this is one of the most important election years in the history of our country. That is why I have been stressing to citizens the importance of voting, as well as, becoming an informed electorate. There is an abundant amount of information on the front pages of dailies across the country, television evening news and talk shows about the national election, but what about local candidates? In April Governor Nathan Deal signed HB 397 into law. HB 397 is an overhaul of the state’s Open Meetings and Open Records Acts that won bipartisan support within the state legislature this year and is now in effect.
Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens, the Georgia Press Association, the Georgia First Amendment Foundation and other key media and government associations worked hand-in-hand to rewrite this important legislation.
