The unending attack on Christianity reaches military
As I listened to retired U.S. Army Staff Sargent and member of the singing group 4Troops Ron Henry share his testimony at Mayor Steve Rigdon’s annual Prayer Breakfast, held last Thursday on the National Day of Prayer, it was evident how God has worked through this soldier’s life. Henry shared an emotional experience of how he and other soldiers came under fire from insurgents with AK-47s at close range while traveling in a vehicle. As the shots rang out Henry stated he immediately began to ask for God’s protection and added that not one soldier in the military vehicle was harmed. To me, that’s evidence enough that God hears the prayers of the righteous.

Community newspapers: A vital cog in democracy
By Charles N. Davis
Buried somewhere in my parents’ house in Watkinsville is a stack of aged newspapers – copies of the Athens Banner-Herald, The Oconee Enterprise and the dearly departed Athens Observer. You see, in my family, community newspapers have always been the chroniclers of family lore, of scholastic achievements, of the fleeting fame of youth. [Full Story »]

Money down the drain
Did you know that the Federal Government owns or leases between 55,000 and 77,000 vacant properties? The really insane part to this problem is that the government leases office space for various government agencies instead of using some of the vacant properties to house the agencies.

Appling teams shine
This past week was an impressive week for athletic teams in our community. First the Appling County Middle School Rams football team defeated Pierce County on October 31 to win the 2012 Middle School Conference Championship and then on Friday night the Appling Christian Academy Eagles football team completed the perfect season bringing home another Georgia Christian Athletic Association’s State Championship defeating the Kings Way Crusaders from Douglasville. Both of the games were hard fought and proved why Appling County has some of the best athletic programs and athletes in the state.

Note the difference
There have been numerous occasions over the years guest writers have written controversial opinions to this newspaper for publication, and in many instances, these opinions have caused what I like to refer to as a “Shoot The Messenger”-type mentality with The News-Banner playing the role as messenger.
