I’m going to miss his wit
About five or six years ago when my parents were getting ready to retire, I decided to replace the ageing roof on The News-Banner’s building. My dad and I discussed several options including going back with a tar and rock-type roof or go with a modified-type roof, which would be lighter on the building’s structure and more energy efficient. I opted to go with the modified roof, even though the tar-type roof held up for over 25 years.

Obama’s misleading three million jobs created claim
By Bill Wilson
In the State of the Union Address, Barack Obama attempted to convince the American people that the economy has turned the corner, things are getting better, and “we’ve come too far to turn back now.”
Reading Obama’s speech carefully, he noted the 8 million jobs that have overall been lost in the recession. [Full Story »]

Two directors?
At a called meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, members of the Appling County Board of Commissioners voted to do something a little unusual. On a split vote the commission voted to hire a second public works director. Tommy Davis currently holds the position and the county expends approximately $50,000.00 on his annual salary. It is understood that both positions would have equal authority.

Did the headline get your attention? It should. I watched a video on ABC news last week that simply has my head spinning. The video report shows how three road and bridge projects across the country are being built by Chinese government-owned agencies. The projects include:

You call this fair?
I read an interesting article a few days ago written by T.J. McCormack titled ‘Hey, 99 Percenters, You Call This Fair?’. According to McCormack the New York City Independent Budget Office released some staggering information about the city’s tax information.

A smart professor
An economics professor made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. This particular class had insisted that the current socialist movement in America is working and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich; a great equalizer.

A time to give thanks
Did you know that in 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies? For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

Can you spare five?
(Editor’s note: The following is an article submitted by Pastor Lester Weldon regarding the Appling County Food Bank. The food bank is a tremendous asset to Appling County. Please support this worthy cause.)
By Lester Weldon, President Appling County Food Bank
While attending a pastor’s conference at Moody Bible in Chicago, a man on the street approached us asking for assistance. He felt that five would make a difference in getting food to eat and affect his life for the day. I am thinking of the Appling County Food Bank and what a difference ‘five’ would make. But the five is not in monetary terms, but one of our most valuable assets, “Time.” [Full Story »]
