Larry’s green thumb has impressed immensely me this year. Until now, I never knew he had one. Actually, there was that one year that we grew so many white acre peas that we didn’t know what to do with them, but that was the exception rather than the rule. This year he’s grown an incredible and diverse garden. From blueberries to white acre peas, from sunflowers to azaleas, from corn to pole beans, he just keeps on adding plants and expanding the garden. [Full Story »]

Big Red performed wonderfully. He loves Interstates where he can put his head in the wind and lope to his satisfaction. He happily strutted his stuff when he sprinted through Jacksonville and headed down I-95 to Daytona Beach. The high performance super Mustang was beside himself. B. On Friday night, May 20, 2011, yet another class will don red and black caps and gowns and march across the field in Jimmy Swain Stadium to accept diplomas and become Appling County High School’s newest alumni. Families and friends sit proudly in the bleachers, waiting to hug and congratulate them. Teachers smile as graduates march by. We’ve nurtured and taught them for four years now. The time has come round for them to move on. The ritual happens every year at this time. As “Pomp and Circumstance” floats on the evening air, every class marches in, each different, yet all very much the same. [Full Story »]

The fog was beginning to lift. We could see more clearly the huge aircraft carriers docked along the shore of the St. Johns River. Where the St. Johns River flows into the Atlantic Ocean is huge. Although the water was calm, we felt intimidated by the immensity of our surroundings. [Full Story »]

There’s nothing nuanced about Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens’ understanding of the state’s “open meetings” law - and that’s a good thing.

Outside of some exceptions - most notably regarding acquisition of real estate, discussion of some legal matters and the hiring and firing of employees - state law is abundantly and unequivocally clear as to when local governmental entities must open their proceeding to the public. [Full Story »]

A memorable fishing trip

Mayport, Florida is in Duval County, in the Jacksonville metro area. The community name derives from the “River of May” the French name for the Saint Johns River. Mayport is primarily the homeport for a large U. S. Navy fleet. However, there are other interests there including deep-sea fishing boats. B. J.’s and my interest on this particular trip was a deep-sea fishing trip with our friends Donald and Jerri Lewis. [Full Story »]
