Among the favorite places to spend vacations are the mountains and the beaches. B. J. and I love both the beaches and the mountains. We love the beach so much that we live near a beach and enjoy it to the utmost. There are other beaches that we love. Among our favorite beaches are Daytona, Pompano, Ft. Lauderdale, and Waikiki. Dear Editor,

A few weeks ago a letter was mailed to my home from Mrs. Michelle Obama. Contained in the envelope was a panoramic style photograph of President Obama, Mrs. Obama and their two daughters. The purpose of the letter was to ask for a donation for her husband’s reelection. The idea of her using pictures of her family to promote their agenda struck a nerve with me. [Full Story »] 

Baxley is a “trashy” place

I know that headline seems abrasive, but as I look around our beautiful city I see streets and yards riddled with trash (such as the intersection shown above). Is this because of the owners of the property? No. It is because of the trashy people throwing their trash out the window of a car or truck. Hardly a day passes that we don’t find trash thrown in the yard here at The News-Banner from vehicles passing by. A lottery ticket, a baby wipe, drink cans or bottles, shopping bags and even an entire bag of trash have been found at our office. Do people have no self-respect or respect for others? When I was a child, we visited Granny Nichols every Sunday afternoon for an hour or two. The grown-ups would sit and talk while we children played, but first I had to stand in front of Granny as she ran her fingers over my face and felt the top of my head. Dear Editor,

My name is Jodi Phillips, I reside in Reidsville, and I am employed as the office manager for Nunez Pine Straw in Baxley. I have been working here since the end of May. In the few short months that I have been here, I have noticed a lot of stray dogs being left for the animal shelter, which is located directly behind our office. In the past month, there have been four puppies left and they run around our office as well as the mobile homes searching for food.
I was able to take one of them to the shelter one day when I saw the Animal Control officer driving by. (I had called the day before about it and he never stopped by.) A week later, there were two more puppies here, fortunately, I, myself was able to find them homes! Today, there is another one. I have not seen the Animal Control officer go by our office since last week. I can hear the dogs in the back barking whenever employees go to the water treatment plant. [Full Story »]

Something’s Fishy

I called our new priest the other afternoon and asked, “How are you doing?” He answered with one word, “Starving”, so I told him it was fat Monday at the Vickers household and he was welcome to come over. He asked “What are we cooking?” to which I replied cracklin’ bread, collard greens, smoked hippo hocks and black eyed peas, rice, and fried fresh pork side. All that was needed from there was what time the feeding frenzy was to start.

I like to ‘feed the preacher’, and remember this being a southern tradition. [Full Story »]

Way back in high school, I had a wonderful math teacher who taught me algebra and geometry. Her method of teaching made math easy and fun for me. She stood, clicking her chalk on the board, explaining problem after problem until the bulb popped on in my brain. She had infinite patience with those of us who paid attention and tried, but woe be unto any one who didn’t. She threw chalk and books, screamed at lazy students, and slapped her yardstick onto her desk. Some of her methods are frowned upon today and I don’t advocate using them, but they worked—for me anyway. Even then I had little tolerance for lethargic students and agreed with her on most things. However, she often told the class, “Don’t do as I do; do as I say do.” Even in my youth, I suspected that instruction. [Full Story »]

Let’s face it. Some things are difficult if not impossible to love. Take snakes for instance. Have you ever had anyone, even a genuine snake handler, tell you that they love the slithery things. In fact, most people will shiver just at the mention of one. Many ordinarily peaceful travelers in the country will stop their car and hunt a stick to terminate any serpentine creature that might be innocently trying to get to the other side of the road. The Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) submitted an application to the U. S. Department of Education (US ED) requesting flexibility through waivers of ten Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) requirements and their associated, regulatory, administrative and reporting requirements. On February 9, 2012, Georgia’s Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) Flexibility Waiver was approved by the US ED. Two of the ten requested waivers directly affected Supplemental Educational Services (SES) and Public School Choice (Choice). The waiver allows local educational agencies (LEAs) greater flexibility in designing a flexible learning program tailored to the needs of their schools and will have the capacity to serve more students in need for additional academic support.
