Roy Aubrey Reynolds
Roy Aubrey Reynolds, 81, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Reynolds was born to the late Tommy B. Reynolds and the late Beatrice Long Reynolds June 25, 1930 in Baxley and resided here most of his life. He was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years and was Master Sergeant. Mr. Reynolds served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

M. J. Van Winkle
M. J. (Rip) Van Winkle, 68, of Olney, MD, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was born in Upper Darby, PA, the son of Mary Fielding Van Winkle and George Milton Van Winkle. A graduate of Bloomsburg (PA) University, Mr. Van Winkle moved to Montgomery County, MD in 1965 where he taught math for 35 years; five at Leland Jr. High School in Bethesda and thirty at Thomas Wootton High School in Rockville.

Gregory Scott Bowen, 48, died Monday, August 1, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Savannah. He was born on June 30, 1963 to the late James H. Bowen and Rosa Turner Bowen in Baxley and had resided here most of his life. He was employed as a meat cutter for Harvey’s Supermarket in Baxley.

Shirley Bernice Carter
Shirley Bernice (Cookie) Carter, died July 31, 2011. Mrs. Carter was born July 9, 1963 in Baxley to Janie C. Fletcher and the late James Otis Fletcher, Sr. She was a faithful and dedicated church and choir member at St. Paul C.O.G.I.C. and a proud member of the Long Riders Bike Club. Mrs. Carter loved spending time with her family and friends, and traveling with her husband and bike club members around the world. Cookie was a loving and caring person who will be greatly missed. Her father, James Otis Fletcher and a sister, Clara Byrd, preceded her in death.

Evelyn Padgett Collins
Evelyn Padgett Collins, 86, died Saturday, July 30, 2011 at her residence. She was born May 8, 1925 to the late Luther Padgett and the late Georgianne Herrington Padgett. Mrs. Collins graduated from Appling County High School in 1941. Her teaching career began in the fall of 1941 at the age of 17. She taught two grades at Liberty School in Appling County. When Liberty School was consolidated with Dyal School she moved to Dyal School to teach. She was principal at Dyal School from 1956 to 1965. During that time she usually taught two grades. Evelyn was also a basketball coach, librarian and lunchroom manager.

Amelia Johnson, 65, died Thursday, August 6, 2011 at her residence. She was born to the late Bennie Stephens and the late Annie Kicklighter Stephens on Jan. 22, 1946 in Baxley and had resided here all of her life. Amelia was retired and before retirement she worked as a saleslady for Liberty National Life Insurance Company and she was a member of First Baptist Church of Baxley.

Thomas Kelly Waters
Thomas (Tommy) Kelly Waters, 61, of Blackshear, died suddenly Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at his residence. He was a native of Bacon County, but had lived in Blackshear the past two years. Tommy was son of the late Williard Waters and Vassie Lee Thomas Waters; a brother, Jimmy Waters and a sister, Linda Mikell, preceded him in death.

George W. Copeland, 90, of Hampton, passed away on July 29, 2011. Mr. Copeland was a faithful servant of Fayetteville First United Methodist Church and a skilled craftsman in the art of wood-working. Mr. Copeland had served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Delta Air Lines after 27 years of service.

Mrs. McLemore was born April 23, 1912 in Appling County to the late Silas Malcolm Johnson and the late Letitia Sellers Johnson. She was a member of Surrency Baptist Church. Frances Elizabeth was a schoolteacher, artist and musician. Her husband, Carr McLemore, preceded her in death.

Carlene Francis Carter, 85, of Odum, died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 in the Appling Healthcare System. Carlene Francis was born Sept. 21, 1925 in Toombs County to the late Charlie Wesley Williams and the late Dosie Yawn Williams. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Wayne County. Mrs. Carter was a retired teacher from the Appling County Board of Education and a member of the Appling County Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed quilting.

Bobby Lee Gay, Sr., 64, died Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Gay was born Dec. 30, 1946 in Baxley to the late J. W. Gay and the late Mattie Lee Stone Gay and had resided here all of his life. He was retired and before retirement he worked as a backhoe operator for Appling County Road Department. He was a member of Philippi Baptist Church but was attending Spring Branch Baptist Church.
