Mrs. Corine Carter Allen, 84, died August 15, 2011 at Hospice Satilla House, Inc. in Waycross. She was born March 2, 1927 in Fairhope, Alabama to the late Marion Carter, Sr. and the late Sallie Coleman Carter.
Mrs. Allen was the wife of the late Joseph Oscar Allen. She was a dedicated member of Scott’s Chapel United Methodist Church, one of the founding members of Gardenia Social Club, Progressive Charity Club, and Ida Mae Chapter #299 Order of the Eastern Star, Girls Social Club and the Pierce County Senior Citizens Service Center. She received her education in the Pierce County School System.

Virginia Griffin Drennan, 101, died Thursday, August 11, 2011 in Huntsville, Alabama. Mrs. Drennan was born Jan. 10, 1910 in Pinewood, S.C. to the late Joseph Reid Griffin and the late Sarah Isabella Stokes Griffin. She was a former member of the First Methodist Church of Baxley. Mrs. Drennan was a retired schoolteacher and a loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Luther White Drennan and the youngest of nine children, Ida, Reid, Ellen, Julian, Henry, Eugene, Newell and Edwin.

Mrs. Oralene James Morris, 88, of Lyons, died Saturday, August 13, 2011 in the Pavilion in Baxley after an extended illness. She was a native of Toombs County, and lived there all of her life until moving to Baxley with her daughter five years ago due to family illness. She retired from the City Florist in Lyons, and Morris Finance and Tax Service in Baxley. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Lyons. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Toombs County Chapter #546 where she served as the secretary for ten years. She was a member of the Order of the Amaranth and a community volunteer. Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Morris; a son, Donald J. Morris, and two brothers, Glynn James and Coye James.

Hazel Sellers Malone, 80, of St. Mary’s, died Monday, August 1, 2011 in St. Mary’s after a lengthy illness. She was born Nov. 14, 1930 in Appling County to the late Will and Lois Kennedy Sellers. Hazel grew up in the Zion Community and was a graduate of Surrency High School. She made her home in St. Mary’s since 1954 and worked as an administrative secretary for the Gillman Paper Company until her retirement. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Roy Aubrey Reynolds, 81, died Tuesday, August 9, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Reynolds was born to the late Tommy B. Reynolds and the late Beatrice Long Reynolds June 25, 1930 in Baxley and resided here most of his life. He was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years and was Master Sergeant. Mr. Reynolds served in the Korean and Vietnam Wars.

M. J. (Rip) Van Winkle, 68, of Olney, MD, passed away Monday, August 8, 2011 at Montgomery General Hospital in Olney. He was born in Upper Darby, PA, the son of Mary Fielding Van Winkle and George Milton Van Winkle. A graduate of Bloomsburg (PA) University, Mr. Van Winkle moved to Montgomery County, MD in 1965 where he taught math for 35 years; five at Leland Jr. High School in Bethesda and thirty at Thomas Wootton High School in Rockville.

Shirley Bernice (Cookie) Carter, died July 31, 2011. Mrs. Carter was born July 9, 1963 in Baxley to Janie C. Fletcher and the late James Otis Fletcher, Sr. She was a faithful and dedicated church and choir member at St. Paul C.O.G.I.C. and a proud member of the Long Riders Bike Club. Mrs. Carter loved spending time with her family and friends, and traveling with her husband and bike club members around the world. Cookie was a loving and caring person who will be greatly missed. Her father, James Otis Fletcher and a sister, Clara Byrd, preceded her in death.
