Eugene “Gene” Hardwick
Eugene “Gene” Hardwick, age 78, of Lamar County, passed away unexpectedly on May 2, 2012. He was a Graduate of Appling Co. High School and Perry College, as well as the University of Georgia, with degrees in Accounting and Business Administration. He was a retired executive with BellSouth with 38 years of service, and was a member of the Telephone Company Pioneers. He was a deacon with the First Baptist Church of Roswell. He was a director with the American Cancer Society, he worked with Relay For Life for many years, was a member of Village Readers- a group that reads to Pre-K children, past president of Barnesville Rotary Club, served on the City of Roswell Zoning Board, served on the Solid Waste and Industrial Development Authority for Lamar Co., was two term Lamar County Commissioner (Vice-Chair for six years), current Chairman of the Lamar Co. Republican Party, among many other titles. He raised Beefmaster cattle and was the current President of the Southeastern Beefmaster Breeders Assn. and current president of Mid-Atlantic Beefmasters Marketing Group, and member of the GA. Cattleman’s Association. He was a decorated Marine and a Mason. He loved the outdoors and was an avid and accomplished hunter and fisherman.

Bonnie Mae Lee Crosby
Bonnie Mae Lee Crosby, age 75 of McDonough, passed away suddenly April 20. She was born in Bristol, to the late James Denver and Beulah Ophelia Harris Lee. She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Melvin Eugene Crosby, Sr. Bonnie had worked for J.C. Penney’s Outlet in Forest Park for many years and was a member of Oakland Baptist Church.

Janie Daniel Padgett
Janie Daniel Padgett, 95, died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Appling Healthcare System. Mrs. Padgett was born July 1, 1916 and was the daughter of Cleburn Laing and Carrie Wood Daniel of Bellville. After attending school in Claxton she went on to Berry College where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Janie eventually moved to Baxley and married H. C. Padgett in 1942. In 1956 she became the Home Economist for Appling County and continued there until she retired. She was preceded in death by her husband, H. C. Padgett; two sisters, Evelyn D. Mallard and Carolyn D. Head; and two brothers, Carolus and Cecil Daniel.

Roberta Dean Quinn
Roberta Dean Quinn, 79, of Lithia Springs, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Mrs. Quinn was a homemaker, member of First Baptist Church of Lithia Springs, WMU Director for over 20 years, taught 5-year-old Sunday School for over 30 years, was an avid Atlanta Braves fan and loved working in her yard. Her husband, B. C. Quinn, preceded her in death.

Betty Ruth Rentz Truett, 65, of Graham, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012. Mrs. Truitt was born in Graham. She was the daughter of the late Levi Grady Rentz and Annie Ruth Hesters Rentz and was preceded in death by a brother, Herman Rentz. Betty was an accounting office associate and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Ollie Mae Herrington Wilson, 88, of Hazlehurst, died Monday, April 23, 2012. Mrs. Wilson was a native and life long resident of Jeff Davis County. She was the daughter of the late Tommy Herrington and Minnie Hayes Herrington and the wife of the late Henry Dallas Wilson, Jr. Ollie Mae was a hairdresser and a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Velma Smith
Mrs. Velma Smith, 86, of Hazlehurst, died Monday, April 16, 2012. Mrs. Smith was born in Folkston but had lived most of her life in Hazlehurst. She was the daughter of the late William Mancil and Vermell Bowen Mancil and the wife of the late Wayne Detroit Smith. Mrs. Smith was a school teacher retiring after 35 years with the Jeff Davis County School System. She also taught Adult Literacy for approximately 15 years in Vidalia. Velma was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was a Sunday School Teacher for many years at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Marie Murray Watson, 92, of Brunswick passed away April 21, at her residence. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 o’clock on April 24th at the Edo Miller Funeral Home with the Elder Ron Scarboro officiating. Burial will follow at the Brunswick Memorial Park and Cemetery with Glenn Leccese, Terry Leccese, Dave Brown, Dwight Brown, Van Watson, and Eric Sizemore serving as pallbearers.

Hilda Burke
Hilda Burke, 80, of Jesup, died Tuesday, April 10, 2012 in Wayne Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. The Appling County native had lived in Jesup the past 56 years. She was a member of Jesup First Baptist Church and the Retired Educators Association. She volunteered with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and the Wayne County Peachy Clean Committee for many years. Her husbands, Watson Burke and Rufus Roberson preceded her in death along with a daughter-in-law, Willeen Burke.

Rose Mary “Peaches” Smith
Rose Mary “Peaches” Smith, daughter of the late Walter and Ola Mae Smith, born on June 2, 1960 in Baxley, died Thursday, March 22, 2012. She grew up in Appling County. Her fellowship with Christ began at First African Missionary Baptist Church, Baxley, where she was a member of the Singles Ministry and a very proud member of the Total Adoration Praisers (TAP). Rose Mary “Peaches” also had the same love and commitment for the Family and Friends Day Rally as her father. She was educated in the Appling County public schools where she graduated in 1978. Peaches continued her education at South Georgia College in Douglas. The two loves of her life were her children, Brian and Amy. Ms. Smith was employed by Alco in Hazlehurst for many years and later she became a dedicated employer of Fred’s Dollar Store where she worked until her health failed. The joys and pleasures of her life were her children, sisters, brothers, relatives and friends of whom God had given her. In addition to her parents, a sister, Barbara A. Johnson and a brother, Elder Norman J. Smith, also preceded her in death.

Henry Damon Tillman
Henry Damon Tillman, 72, of Surrency, died April 14, 2012 at Appling Healthcare System. Tillman was born March 9, 1940 to the Rev. Henry Curtis and Runell Kimbrel Tillman. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Tillman proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army and the United States Marines from 1957 to 1986. He was a Sergeant Major E9 82nd Air Borne, SERE, Delta Force and two tours in Vietnam. Tillman was a member of the National Rifle Association and an avid outdoorsman.

Lorretta M. Rawlson Bystrak, 73, of Surrency, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at her residence. She was a native of Brunswick and resided in Gray before moving to Surrency three years ago. Loretta was a registered Nurse and was self-employed as a home health care nurse. She was the daughter of the late Lewis Rawlson and the late Barbara Head Rawlson.

Allen Bruce Harris
Allen Bruce Harris “Speed Ball, ” died March 24, 2012 at Appling Healthcare System in Baxley. Allen was born in Sarasota, FL on Jan. 7, 1963 to the late Ernest Harris, Jr. and Juanita Williams Harris. Speed Ball as he was affectionately called was a joy to be around and was always willing to help a friend in need. He attended the Appling County School System. Harris loved life and lived it to its fullest. During his early life he worked as a machine operator at a manufacturing company for a number of years.
