Jewell Skinner
Jewell Skinner, 86, of Richmond Hill, died Saturday, June 30, 2012. Mrs. Skinner was born May 30, 1926 in Appling County to the late Henry Chester Hardwick and the late Margaret Rebecca Willoughby Hardwick. She was the wife of the late John Brotus “J. B.” Skinner for 26 years. Jewell was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She will be remembered for her love of family and friends as well as many others who touched her life. Her daily prayers were lifted to heaven for others and will be remembered by many. Jewell was devoted to reading and studying God’s word and was always ready to share him and his love with His people. Mrs. Skinner’s home for the last five and half years was at Bryan County Health and Rehab Center in Richmond Hill, where she died at the age of 86. The first 80 years of her life was lived in Baxley, which she considered to still be her home. Mrs. Skinner was devoted to her entire family from the oldest to the youngest. She was an avid cook and was instrumental in writing a family cookbook to carry on her legacy of excellent cooking for family and friends.

Coach Ben Park
Coach Ben Park, 93, of Jesup and Baxley, died Thursday, June 28, 2012 after an extended illness. The Washington Co., native had lived most of his adult life in Wayne and Appling Co. He was a member of the Jesup First United Methodist Church and the Baxley First United Methodist Church and was a graduate of Auburn University, where he played football and basketball and started his coaching career with Presbyterian College in Clinton, SC. After serving in the U. S. Army, he served as athletic director in Vidalia, Jesup, and Alma, and influenced many young people with life skills in pursuing greater career goals. He laid the foundation for the Wayne County Recreation Department and was honored this year with the naming of the “Ben Park Complex” in his honor. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, church activities, playing bridge, and fishing. He was predeceased by his wives: Frances H. Park and Maebelle Breen Park, a daughter, Lyn Park, great-granddaughter, Tinley Park, and ten siblings.

Mitchell Leroy Russell, Sr.
Mitchell Leroy Russell, Sr., died Sunday, June 24 at 5:28 p.m. Russell was born Dec. 28, 1935 in Appling County to the late Robert Russell, Sr. and Audrey Moody Russell. He attended school in Appling County. He was employed and retired from Hazlehurst Mills. Russell farmed and worked in turpentine on his own land. He was a lifetime member of St. James A.M.E. Church; he held the office of trustee pro-tem, finance committee member, served on the steward board, Sunday school scholar, church van driver for Sunday school—youth and the church lawn keeper. Leroy married Clara Mae Davis Oct. 17, 1954 and to this union eight children were born. A daughter, Cassandra Russell and two sons, Clifton Russell and James Henry Russell preceded him in death.

Florence B. Tillman, 94, of Surrency, died Monday, June 25, 2012 at the Pavilion. Mrs. Tillman was born Sept. 21, 1917, to the late Edwin Horace Beane, Sr. and the late Eura Overstreet Beane. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Florence was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Wilbur Tillman and a brother, Edwin “Bud” Beane, Jr.

REUBEN HOLCOMB
David E. Miles Funeral Home announces the death and funeral service for Reuben Holcomb, 90, who died Thursday, May 31, 2012 in the Satilla Regional Hospital in Waycross. Reuben was born Feb. 7, 1922 in Appling County and had lived here all of his life. He was a retired farmer and a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he faithfully attended the Joy Sunday-School class for four and one-half years without missing a Sunday. Holcomb was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. He was a member of the Baxley Masonic Lodge #195 and a charter member of the Baxley VFW Club. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Evelyn Mann Holcomb. He was the son of the late James H. Holcomb and the late Effie Lucille Osborne Holcomb.

Hilton White, 86, of Alston, died Friday, June 8, 2012 in the Meadows Regional Hospital in Vidalia. White was born May 21, 1926 in Jeff Davis County, to the late Rowland Y. White and the late Lillie Creamer White, and had resided in Macon until moving to Alston when he retired 13 years ago. He was the owner and operator of White Tire City in Warner Robbins for many years. White was a veteran of the United States Army and served in World War II.

James L. Waddell
James L. Waddell, 89, of Jesup, died Friday, May 25, 2012 at his residence. James was born Feb. 4, 1927 to the late Olen Waddell and the late Mary Owens Waddell in Meriwether and had lived in Jesup for the past sixty years. He was retired and before his retirement he was self-employed as a cement finisher. Waddell was a veteran of the United State Army and served in World War II. He was a member of New Life Pentecostal Church of Jesup.
