James Larry Wilson, 67, of Surrency, died Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012 at his residence. Larry was born Oct. 17, 1944 to the late James Burl and Edna Kelly Wilson. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church. Wilson was retired from the mobile home industry after 43 years as owner and operator. He was an avid Nascar and Georgia Bulldog fan. He was an entrepreneur, member of several social and business organizations, proud father, father-in-law, grandfather and great friend.

Jim Bush, Senior
Jim Bush, Sr., died July 24, 2012 at his residence at 331 Yellow Pine Circle in Baxley. Jim was born Jan. 26, 1939 in Appling County and had resided in Lakeland, FL for 33 years before moving to Baxley in June of 2012. He was a retired truck driver and was employed with Inicial Uniform Company before his retirement. Jim was of the Church of God Faith. He was the son of the late Major Bush and the late Hattie Lou Hutcheson Bush.

Inez Dyal
Inez Dyal, 84, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 in Appling Healthcare System. Inez was born Dec. 6, 1927 in Appling County to the late Evans Altman and the late Roxie Varnadore Altman. She was a member of Midway Missionary Baptist Church and was faithful in the Ladies Senior Adult Sunday school class, the WMU organization and a Vacation Bible School Teacher. Mrs. Dyal achieved various awards of dedication and craft ribbons. She was a devoted wife of 62 years, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, a wonderful cook, seamstress, personal friend and caretaker. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Lorace Dyal and two sisters, Wilma Dyal and Lucile Bratcher.

Steve Griffis, 56, of Baxley and Ocoee, Fla., died Sunday, July 29, 2012 of an apparent heart attack. He was a member of Ephesus Church of God, a former industrial maintenance worker and a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He was predeceased by his wife, Charlotte Bradham Griffis and a brother, Larry Griffis.

Tommie Cagle Statum
Tommie Cagle Statum, 77, of Baxley, and Hinesville, died Thursday, August 2, 2012 after a short illness. The Huntsville, Ala. native was a member of Zion Church of God in Appling County, a former English instructor with the Liberty County School System and worked for many years with the Grambling Louisiana State University School System. She was predeceased by her husband, the Rev. John D. Statum and enjoyed ministering with him for over 40 years.

Irvin “Buddy” Higginbotham, Sr., 73, died Saturday, July 21, 2012. Higginbotham was born Feb. 7, 1939 in Jacksonville, FL to the late Frederick Waas Higginbotham and the late Louise Batten Higginbotham. He was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force. He was a member of Morocco Temple Shrine, Albert J. Russell Blue Lodge and Woodmen of the World Life Insurance. Buddy was recognized for Who’s Who International of Professionals.

Earl Griffin, Sr., 72, died Friday, July 13, 2012 in Community Hospice in Vidalia. Earl was born Nov. 22, 1939 in Ocilla to the late Rev. Ashley Griffin and the late Emma Gray Griffin. He was a member of Damascus Primitive Baptist Church of Mershon, where he served as a deacon. Griffin was a veteran having served in the United States Air Force. He was a retired educator and was retired from the railroad. Earl was preceded in death by his sister, Lillian Fletcher, and four brothers, Albert, Barney, Virgil and John David Griffin.

She was a member of 2013 graduating class of Appling County High School. She loved to listen to her radio; she loved her computer and loved to make people laugh. She was preceded in death by her daddy, Robert Brinson Oliver and a brother, Justin Brinson “Red” Oliver.

PHILIP A. HARE, SR.
Philip A. Hare, Sr., 76, died Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at his residence under the care of Southern Care Hospice. He was a native of North Tonawanda, NY and had lived in Appling County since 1986. Hare retired from the United States Navy after 22 years of service. He was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church, the American Legion and was a lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Corfu, NY.

LOLA NAILS
A devoted mother, grandmother, sister and church member, Lola Nails, of Norwalk, CT, died Thursday, July 5, 2012. Lola was born May 9, 1944 to the late Lonell and Sarah Ethel Nails in Baxley where she was raised and attended school. Upon relocating to Connecticut, she was employed at Myers Manufacturing Company and Caldor in Norwalk, CT for many years. Lola was also a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church, Norwalk, CT for many decades.
In addition to her parents, Lola was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Spearmon, a brother, Joe Nails and two brothers-in-law, Roosevelt Coleman and Charles Winston. [Full Story »]
