In compliance with the Individual Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), The Georgia Records Act, and the Appling County School System policy on destruction of data collected, maintained or used in the provision of a free and appropriate public education for the handicapped and/or exceptional children in the Appling County Schools, the Special Education Department announces its intention to destroy special education records during the month of July 2015.
Records on students who were enrolled in a special education program in the Appling County School System who were born prior to July 1, 1988 are no longer needed by the schools for educational purposes.
The confidential records may be needed by the student or guardian for social security or other purposes. If you, as a former special education student or a legal guardian of a former special education student, wish to obtain these records prior to destruction, you should contact the Special Education Department of the Appling County School System. Positive identification will be required before the records can be released to the individual.
