Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

On February 16, answered a call to Post Road in reference to a theft. A complainant stated a subject took an assortment of scrap metal from her property. Investigation revealed the identity of the subject that took the scrap metal. Complainant stated she did not want to press charges. [Full Story »]

This week the Georgia House of Representatives welcomed Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Carol Hunstein as she presented the annual State of the Judiciary address. The State of the Judiciary address is presented every year to the General Assembly. Chief Justice Hunstein heads the state supreme court and presides over Georgia’s entire judicial branch. Chief Justice Hunstein addressed two main issues in the State of Judiciary address which were sentence reform and specialty courts. [Full Story »] 

On Saturday, 57 drivers in unique vehicles invaded the parking lot at the Town and Country Shopping Center for the first Poor Boys Hot Rods Cruise In. Several hundred people turned out for the event. [Full Story »]

The Baxley City Council adopted a resolution to partner with the Georgia Department of Revenue in an effort to ensure proper payment of sales tax at the regular council meeting held February 22. [Full Story »]

At the February 14 meeting of the Appling County Board of Education, board members approved a recommendation made by Superintendent Scarlett Copeland to hire Brenda Harvey as the new principal of Appling County Primary School. The position was previously held by Copeland and had been vacant since January 1 when Copeland left that position to become superintendent. Harvey had served as assistant principal under Copeland. Superintendent Copeland reported that a process in selecting the new principal was used, including appointing a committee made up of school council members, the principal at Appling County Elementary (Dr. Areatha Virgil) and the superintendent, to review the applications and make a recommendation. Copeland added that Appling School System policy was followed in the hiring process. [Full Story »] 

Chief of Police James Godfrey reports that an arrest has been made in connection with the thefts of February 2 in the Oak Ridge community, in which numerous vehicles were gone into and thefts committed. On Feb. 11, Phillip Laquan Johnson, 19, of Waycross was arrested by the Ware County Sheriff’s Office on outstanding warrants in this incident, and later transferred to Appling County for further judicial proceedings. The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, February 15 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the commissioner opened sealed bids for the purchase of a new sheriff vehicle. [Full Story »]
