Murray Forestry, Inc., from Surrency, was recognized by Georgia Biomass, LLC as their fiber supplier of the quarter for Q1, 2011. Murray Forestry began supplying fiber to Georgia Biomass in early January when the plant began fiber receipts. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Heritage Center will hold its regular support meeting on Sunday, June 5 at 3:00 p.m. at the center. The winners of the eighth grade essay contest will be on hand to read their essays.

Lamb reads essay before council

Kenley Lamb, the district essay contest winner read her winning essay (If I Were Mayor, I would...) before the council at the regular city council meeting May 24. Mayor Steve Rigdon announced that Kenley went on to state with her winning essay. He further stated Kenley was honored with a luncheon at the 755 Club at Turner Field in Atlanta. The mayor treated Kenley and her guests with a ride in a limousine to Turner Field. Kenley’s mother and grandmother accompanied her at the city council meeting. The mayor reported that there were 6,000 applicants submitted and Kenley was one of the top 12 in the state. The mayor and city manager commended Kenley for her immense accomplishment. 2011 Appling County Food Processing Plant schedule announced

The Appling County Food Processing Plant will be in operation again this summer to provide the citizens of Appling and surrounding counties the opportunity to put up fresh fruits and vegetables. Costs for processing will be $.55 per 401 can (quart size), $1.00 per tray for blanching, $.75 per quart for corn, and $3.00 per bushel for shelling peas and beans. The plant will be open at 7:00 a.m. each day of operation and all food will need to be in the plant no later than 11:00 a.m. Customers are expected to perform the necessary washing, peeling, shucking or other steps needed to prepare their food for processing. Plant personnel will be available to assist in cooking and sealing the products. The food processing plant will be open on the following days, June 8-10, 15-17, 22-24, and 28-30, July 1, 5-8, 14-15, and 18-22. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Retired Educators meeting was called to order by President Patsy Buchannon on Wednesday, May 18 at the Baxley Church of God Fellowship Hall. The inspiration was given by Joy Connelley. The pledge to the flag was led by James Twiggs. The group remained standing for musical selections with Kay Eunice. Gretchen Miles read the minutes from the April meeting and Elizabeth Dunn read the treasurers’ report. Both were approved as read. Eveline Peacock sent five get well cards, one sympathy card and one thinking of you card to members since the April meeting. [Full Story »]

The 27th annual National Peace Officer’s Memorial Day ceremony took place Thursday, May 19 in Baxley to honor fallen officers at the Appling County Law Enforcement Center. The ceremony was a joint observance with other area law enforcement agencies including the Baxley Police Department, Appling County Sheriff’s Department, Georgia State Patrol, citizens, leaders, county and city officials. The solemn, yet beautiful ceremony was held for the purpose of paying honor and tribute to fallen ‘peace’ officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, those who chose to protect us all. Kara Clark named ACHS Valedictorian

Kara Clark, Valedictorian of the Class of 2011, is the daughter of James and Melanie Clark. Kara has been active in various organizations throughout her high school career including Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Science Club, Math Team, Spanish Club, 4-H, and Beta Club. She has enjoyed helping with Special Olympics, the Secret Angel Project, and Sunshine Center visits. She has been a Goal Card recipient all four years of high school. During her senior year, Kara was the Beta Club President, alto section leader in chorus, and leader of the Appling Applause Show Choir. Maegan Ryles is 2011 ACA Valedictorian

Maegan Ryles has attended Appling Christian Academy for five years. She was a member of the ACA chapter of the Georgia Association of Christian Schools Honor Society for four years and served as vice-president in her senior year. She was a member of the Eagle cheer squad, the basketball and the softball programs. Maegan has received the following academic and character awards: “A” Honor Roll all four years of high school while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average. Most recently, Maegan won the Highest Academic Average Awards in English and World History, and had a special recognition in Pre Calculus. In addition, She received the Senior Class Highest Academic Average Award. She has been recognized for her cheerleading ability with awards for “Best All Around Cheerleader,” The Base Award and The Outstanding Cheerleader Award. [Full Story »]
