The Appling County Board of Education (BOE) voted during its regularly scheduled meeting on March 23 to choose IE2 as the option for the local school system. The BOE had to make a state mandated choice between three options, IE2, Traditional and Charter. Superintendent Scarlet Copeland stated that after lengthy discussion between the BOE, Leadership Team and local school officials, IE2 is the most feasible with the needed flexibility to help the system. Choosing IE2 allows the system to request waivers much like the current system and is a contract between the local BOE and the State Board of Education. Under IE2 the local system will be required to meet targets and performance mandates set by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement and could face consequences if those mandates are not met, including conversion to a Charter School System, probation, creation of a remedial action plan or operation by a successful school system or school operator.
