The Friends of the Appling County Public Library cordially invite everyone to a retirement party honoring Annette Osborne on Monday, Jan. 23 at 7:00 p.m. Osborne recently retired after serving many years as Appling County Public Library Circulation Clerk and as Branch Manager. Laurel Higginbotham of Baxley has been selected to participate in one of the most prestigious organizations on the Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College campus, the ABAC Ambassadors.

Hospital votes to secure $1.7 million loan

At a called meeting of the Baxley-Appling County Hospital Authority, held Thursday, January 5, members of the authority voted unanimously to secure a loan from a local bank in the amount of $1,700,000.00 to move forward with installation of Meaningful Use throughout the health care system. Meaningful Use is the term for electronic health records that the federal government has mandated (American Recovery and Reinvestment Act mandate) must be installed by hospitals and doctors across the country by 2013. The penalty for not installing the needed computer record system is lower reimbursements on Medicare and Medicaid and loss of reimbursement from the act for installing the system. According to system representatives, the amount of reimbursement could be reduced by 67 percent if the new system is not installed, which could be devastating to the system. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their first regularly scheduled meeting of 2012 on Tuesday, January 3 starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Appling County Courthouse Annex. During the meeting the commissioners heard concerns from many local citizens about the proposed changes to the Solid Waste Plan with regard to a proposed recycling/waste processing plant. Airport getting an extreme makeover

How busy do you think the Baxley airport is on a weekly basis? Three or four, maybe five planes? Believe it or not, the airport sees as many as 20 to 30 airplanes per week. Many pilots have discovered that Baxley’s low fuel prices and convenience make it an ideal stop. Last April, usually the airport’s busiest month of the year due to an event held in Lakeland, Florida called Sun’n Fun, the airport sold approximately 16,000 gallons of fuel. [Full Story »]
