23rd Annual Tree Fest slated for April 12-13

The 23rd Annual Baxley Tree Fest is set to begin at the end of this week, beginning on Friday, April 12 with “The Root Doctors” performing at the Street Dance from 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. On Saturday, April 13 the festivities continue with different attractions such as Tree Trek, a turtle race, a pedal cart race and an autograph signing by Tommy and Joe of History Channel’s Swamp People. Herndon named 2013-2014 System Teacher of the Year

Patricia Ann Herndon has been named Appling County’s 2013-2014 System Teacher of the Year. Ann Herndon is a native and resident of Appling County. She is the daughter of Patricia Mills and the late Franklin Mills.
She is married to Rick Herndon and is the proud mother of two sons, Jake (19) and Luke (15). They are all active members of Mount Vernon Baptist Church where Ann sings in the church choir and works with three and four year olds in Kid’s Worship. [Full Story »]

City Manager Jeff Baxley announced at the regular council meeting held Tuesday, March 26 that Zaxby’s Restaurant is coming to Baxley and is going to be located out Highway 341 in the Wal-Mart area. He also reported that Tractor Supply should be open around May 1. Stanley Farms now owns Pet Dairy Farm out on Highway 203 and has committed to Appling County for a new industry. He also reported that High Tech, a sawmill equipment business, would be expanding to make pellet equipment and hopefully create seven new positions. [Full Story »]

The City of Baxley invites the community to an open house and ribbon cutting, to be held on Thursday, April 4 from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. (ribbon cutting at 5:30 p.m.), for the City of Baxley’s new airport terminal. County to widen two county roads

At a called work session meeting, held Tuesday, March 26, County Manager Lee Lewis updated the Appling County Commissioners on the widening and resurfacing of Ten Mile and Ben Carter roads. The Georgia Department of Transportation (DOT) has identified these roads as high hazard roadways, due to the width of the roads, and the state approved to widen the roads by adding shoulders to each road. Lewis stated that DOT has agreed to pay $911,088.76 toward the widening project. [Full Story »]
