In the Superior Court of Appling County on January 18, in the case The State of Georgia vs. Jonathan Kyle Courson, an Appling County Grand Jury indicted Jonathan Courson on eight separate counts including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, making a false statement, tampering with evidence, reckless conduct, insurance fraud and criminal attempt to commit theft by deception. Rayonier (NYSE:RYN) announced early Tuesday that it has reached agreement to sell all of the assets of its Wood Products business to International Forest Products Limited (Interfor) for $80 million. The sale, expected to close in the first quarter, will result in an after-tax gain of approximately $40 million. [Full Story »] 

The wife of famed Georgia Football Coach Vince Dooley, Barbara Dooley, will be the special guest speaker at this year’s Baxley-Appling County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting. The event is slated for Tuesday, February 29 at 7:00 p.m. at the Baxley Church of God Social Hall. The event will also feature awards for the Citizen of the Year, STAR Student and Teacher, Induction into the Athletic Hall of Fame and other awards. Tax reform legislation enacted by the Georgia General Assembly in 2012 created a new system for taxing motor vehicles registered in Georgia. As a result, the annual vehicle ad valorem tax, often called the “birthday tax,” will change to a state and local title ad valorem tax on March 1. The Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG) encourages individuals who plan to purchase or transfer the title on a vehicle to learn more about these changes before visiting their local county tag and title office. Beginning March 1, state and local sales tax will no longer apply to the purchase of a motor vehicle (except for the one percent transportation tax on the first $5,000 of any vehicle sale in regions that have this tax). All vehicles purchased or transferred into ownership after this date also will no longer be subject to the annual ad valorem tax. Instead, these vehicles will be subject to a new, one-time state and local title ad valorem tax (TAVT) that is paid at the time owner registers the vehicle and applies for the title with the county. Appling County Elementary School will hold its annual Science Fair January 28 through February 1. Students have been working very hard preparing their projects. The public is cordially invited to visit the Science Fair on Friday, February 1.   [Full Story »] 

The ushering in of a new year was a busy time for the Appling County Food Bank. The food bank is open four hours a day: 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. for the public. In the first five days, which is approximately 20 hours the food bank processed and served 145 households with over 10,000 pounds of food. This was possible by donations to the food bank and a great group of volunteers. [Full Story »]
