Baxley homeowner discovers $58,000.00 in illegal drugs

On Jan. 28 at approximately 6:24 p.m. officers met with a resident at a Pine Street address in reference to some abandoned property found on his property. On arrival the resident told officers that he had found two large cardboard boxes left at his residence that was not his. The resident told officers that he checked the boxes and its contents and discovered that they contained contraband. The resident then called and reported the finding. Upon arrival of officers, the contraband was field-tested and came back positive for marijuana. Both of the boxes were seized, and both contained a large amount of compressed marijuana. During the Baxley-Appling County Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Meeting, held January 29, Knicole Lee was named the 2012 Citizen of the Year for Baxley and Appling County. Lee was nominated by Ann Singer for the prestigious award and Janine Hunter read the nomination letter below to a large audience in attendance at the event. Strong winds cause damage

Pictured is damage to property owned by Lola Poole located at 121 Sellers Road. The damage was a result of strong winds from a storm on Wenesday, January 30. The wind scattered most of the metal roof, damaged trees and other property with no injuries being reported. [Full Story »]

GMSN Devan Reese graduated from Gunner’s Mate School on January 25. Reese graduated with an average of 93. He specializes in small arms weapons and is a technician for the five-inch gun mount on the destroyer DDG 99 USS Farragut, out of Jacksonville, Florida. Local woman arrested for role in multi-state prostitution and sex trafficking ring

On January 17 a federal indictment charged 12 defendants for their roles in an alleged sex trafficking and prostitution ring stretching from Georgia to Florida to North and South Carolina.  The federal charges follow a lengthy investigation dubbed “Operation Dark Night,” which was led by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).  In addition to a number of arrests and searches, federal authorities rescued 11 women alleged to have been forced into prostitution.  [Full Story »]
