Last Tuesday Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach issued a press release that caused great concern for this community and especially for parents of children in the Appling County School System. Deloach reported that his office had investigated a sexual crime accusation in the community, and as a result of the investigation, Appling County High School (ACHS) ninth grade teacher Michael Glenn Waters, 38, of Baxley, was arrested and charged with two counts of child molestation of two possible students. Waters is currently being held in the Appling County Jail awaiting a bond hearing before a superior court judge, believed to be set for September 8 at the Appling County Courthouse. A preliminary hearing was held with an Appling County Magistrate judge, but the judge could not rule on some of the charges. These charges will have to be ruled on by a superior court judge. Waters will remain in custody until a bond hearing can be scheduled.
Waters submitted his resignation to school officials shortly following his arrest. The Appling County Board of Education held a called meeting on Wednesday to accept his resignation and reopen the position at ACHS.
