According to Appling County Sheriff Benny Deloach, at approximately 3:51 a.m., on Sunday, February 19, Appling County 911 received a call with caller stating that a neighbor had shot through their house. The Appling County Board of Commissioners held a called meeting on Thursday, February 16 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex starting at 5:30 p.m. The first act of business for the commissioners was to vote to make no changes to the solid waste plan, which allows for only one solid waste treatment facility (landfill) in the county with that one being owned by the county.

The motion to keep the plan the same was made by Commissioner Ronnie Rentz, with a second by Commissioner Sarah Boatright, and Commissioners Theodore Wilkerson and Charlie Leggett also voted in favor.

At a prior meeting the commission had voted to amend the solid waste plan. By amending the plan, independent companies could have possibly opened another landfill within the county. [Full Story »] 

The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department.

January 19, at approximately 3:20 p.m., officers met with the resident at a Harvey Street address in reference to a theft. On arrival the resident told officers that an uknown person had entered her home and removed a black X-Box System, a baseball piggy bank and its contents, and a gold cross necklace. [Full Story »]

The Baxley City Council approved the lowest and best bids on the airport ramp expansion project at a meeting held Feb. 14. Manager Jeff Baxley stated this project has two parts with schedule “A” covering the primary construction of this project, and schedule “B” covering the electrical part of the project. The manager made the recommendation to accept the lowest bid given by J. Hiers Company for the amount of $469,290.60 for schedule “A”, and to accept the lowest bid from Trinity Electrical Services for $48,485.25 for schedule “B”. [Full Story »] 

As much as many of us would like to be in denial, Appling County has a drug abuse problem. At a recent meeting of the Baxley Lions Club, several of the staff members of the 24/7 House rehabilitation center spoke about their own personal battles with addiction and how they are now helping others. The 24/7 House cannot receive grants from state or federal sources. Their curriculum is faith-based. They have Bible Study every day. They must rely on private donations. [Full Story »] 

Pre-Kindergarten registration will be held at 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for Altamaha Elementary and Fourth District Elementary and at 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. for Appling County Primary School. The registration will be held Saturday, March 3 in the lunchroom at the Appling County High School. You must have the following documents or copies with you at registration: Birth certificate, Social Security card, proof of Appling County residency (gas, water, electric bill or rent receipt+ landlord’s electricity) and Peachcare, Americare or Wellcare. The 10th annual Miss Primateer pageant will be held on Friday evening, February 24, at 7:00 p.m. at the Appling County Elementary Complex. [Full Story »] 

Savannah Carter, a graduate of Appling County High School, and a student at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, will compete for the title of Ms. ABAC at the 43nd annual pageant on February 23. [Full Story »] 

The 2012 Miss Tree Fest Pageant will be held Saturday, March 3, at the Appling County Elementary Complex. Prizes will be awarded in all eight age divisions. [Full Story »] 

Kindergarten registration for the 2012-2013 school year will be conducted through February 29th at Altamaha Elementary School.

Children must be five-years-old on or before September 1, in order to be eligible for kindergarten. [Full Story »] 

Tri-County Court Appointed Special Advocates, a non-profit organization that trains volunteers to become advocates for abused and neglected children in Juvenile Court, is seeking volunteers to begin its spring training program March 8. The training will be at the Appling County James Clark Extension Education Center, which is located directly behind the Baxley/Appling County Public Library. The training will begin on Thursday, March 8 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and on each consecutive Thursday through April 26. CASA’s goal is to provide an advocate for every child that comes through the Juvenile Court system in deprivation court proceedings. [Full Story »]
