Something new is now inside the lobby of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office, and your law enforcement officials are hoping the “Big White Box” will take a big bite out of a major problem – the proper disposal of prescription (Rx) and over the counter (OTC) drugs that are out of date or not needed any more. Rx drug abuse among all age groups is currently being reported by law enforcement agencies across the state and country as a real and growing danger. The Appling County Pirates (15-5 overall, 11-4 Region 1A-AAA) started the week on the road against Southeast Bulloch (12-7, 10-4) with the Pirates coming up just short losing 6-7. The Appling County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with the Brunswick Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office is sponsoring basic handgun safety classes over the next couple of months and Sheriff Benny Deloach has asked that the community be made aware and offered an opportunity to attend. These classes will be conducted by Major Lee Sweat of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office and Investigator Mark Melton from the Appling County District Attorney’s office as well as other certified firearms instructors. Both Sweat and Melton have many years of experience in firearms training and other specialties and we believe that anybody interested in attending will gain some knowledge regardless of their personal expertise in the field of firearms usage. The Appling County High School is hosting a Fuel Up To Play 60 Pep Rally along with a taste testing event introducing various food items for students and community feedback for next year. The event will be held on April 26 beginning at 3:00 p.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m.  The Pep Rally will include healthy eating plays; music, taste testing new foods items from various vendors, fun activities, and the introduction to the High School’s new Smoothie Bar “Sailing with a Smoothie”, and much more… This is going to be very important for students to have a voice in what they like to eat. This past week my two sons, Cole and Jacob, attended a wakeboard camp in Florida. For those not familiar with the sport, wakeboarding is a type of water sport such as skiing or kneeboarding. [Full Story »] 

When we arrived in Clarksville to spend Spring Break with our three youngest grandsons, I handed Trey, Jakey, and Will bags of Easter candy since we had not been there for their Easter activities. Their faces plummeted. [Full Story »] 

Last spring, I was feeding the fish from my dock and saw a small gator come up and begin eating the floating fish food. I started grunting like a baby gator to see if another one would pop up. It did. Scared the crap out of me when I turned around and there he was. I don’t have a witness but I am sure I made it off this fifty-foot dock in about 4 steps. After catching my breath and calming down, rather than shoot the creature, I called the erstwhile gator trapper extraordinaire, “Gator” Preston. They say Gator can trap or snare anything from a bullfrog to a buffalo so I figured he was the man for the job. [Full Story »]
