Nancy Harvard Webb, age 74, of McDonough, passed away, May 23, 2013. She was a teacher at West Clayton Elementary School for 32 years and a member of First Baptist Church of Jonesboro since 1981. [Full Story »] 

Wynell White Youmans, 91, died Monday, May 27, 2013 in Appling HealthCare System. Mrs. Youmans was born Aug. 17, 1921 in Appling County to the late Wesley White and the late Fannie Dunn White. She was a member of Ten Mile Creek Baptist Church. Mrs. Youmans was a member of several garden clubs and noted for her beautiful rose gardens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Youmans and several sisters and brothers. [Full Story »]

The newly created Article V of Chapter 18 [Yard Sales] of the Code of Ordinances was adopted and approved unanimously on Tuesday, May 28 by the Baxley City Council following a second reading at a meeting of the council. The new ordinance was enacted by the city council due in part to their findings after investigation, discussion and review that unregulated sales of items in yards, parking lots and other locales along public right of way pose a danger to parking and orderly traffic flow with the potential of endangering persons and property. Also the city believes such activity harms legitimate businesses, which own or lease property in the city and pay taxes. The city desires to respond to the adverse effects of such activity so as to protect the health, safety and welfare of the city’s citizens. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Board of Education (BOE) held a called meeting on Tuesday, May 28 at the Appling County Fine Arts Center. During the meeting the BOE unanimously approved the class size waiver for county schools at plus five for the upcoming school year. The new waiver will replace the plus eight waiver that was used last year. The waiver allows each class to add up to five students over the maximum limit according to state regulations. The Baxley Police Department reports on May 19 at approx. 3:01 a.m., responded to a call at the Appling County HealthCare System Emergency Room in reference to a stabbing. On arrival officers met with a victim who was receiving medical attention for a stab wound in the chest area. He stated that he and his wife had got into an argument and during which she stabbed him with a screwdriver. Arrested in connection with this incident was Codie Rebecca Quinn, 22, of Baxley, on charges of one count simple assault. [Full Story »] 

Lindsey Johnson more often than not tends to make a great first impression. Not only a standout academic student and a member of the Palm Beach Atlantic University Honors College as a first-year student-athlete, Johnson impressed opposing teams’ coaches this season with her incredible play on the softball diamond. For her efforts, Johnson was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American third-team. Johnson was earlier recognized by being named the first-ever PBA player to be selected to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Region first-team. [Full Story »]
