Friday afternoon we picked two five-gallon buckets of peas from our garden. I picked the Black Crowder peas while Larry worked on the White Acres. Larry taught our grandson Stuart the fine art of pea picking. He has a way to go yet, but we’re working on him. When the picking was finished, Larry and I settled in chairs under the oak trees to shell the peas. After the general conversation flagged, I began reminiscing. [Full Story »]

Helen Ray Dyal, 83, died Monday, June 20, 2011 in the Pavilion. Mrs. Dyal was born August 23, 1927 in Appling County to the late Lewis Ward Artemus Jackson and the late Della Irene Herrington Jackson. She was a member of Zoar Baptist Church where she was active in the Mary Wheeler Sunday School Class and served on the hostess committee and flower committee. Helen was a member of the Frankie Parker Homemakers Club. Her husband, Harvey Dyal and four brothers and two sisters preceded her in death. [Full Story »]

Earl Donald Lewis, 61, died May 15, 2011 at his residence in Lake Worth, FL. Mr. Lewis was born June 24, 1949 in Appling County to late Clarence Barry Lewis, Sr. and the late Virginia S. Lewis. Earl was a Vietnam veteran. He was employed with Gulfstream Roofing of South Florida. He was an outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, barbecues, boating, loved the ocean and also a biker. Mr. Lewis was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Lewis and C. B. Lewis, Jr. and one sister, Annie R. Johnson Unger. [Full Story »] 

Williams gets life sentences for brutal attack

District Attorney Jackie Johnson announces that on June 22, an Appling County jury found Joseph Curtis Williams guilty of kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault, aggravated battery and rape. Chief Superior Court Judge Amanda F. Williams sentenced Joseph Curtis Williams to two consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole plus twenty (20) years in prison. The defendant had previously served ten years in prison after being convicted of kidnapping and aggravated assault in Bacon County. [Full Story »]

Shooting suspect caught in Florida

According to Appling County Sheriff reports at approximately 4:00 a.m. on June 21, deputies responded to Dubberly Road in Northern Appling County in reference to a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found the body of a Hispanic male identified as Matul Porfirio, age 25. A subsequent investigation by the Appling County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation identified the shooter as Jose Filo Gonzalez of 199 Gamble Road, Baxley. [Full Story »]

There were 45 subjects sentenced in Appling County Superior Court June 13 through June 22. Judge Amanda F. Williams sentenced the following people and their charges and sentences are listed below.
As reported above, Joseph Curtis Williams - jury verdict of guilty - rape - life without parole - kidnapping - life without parole consecutive with count one. Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

June 19, answered a call to Surrson Street in reference to a fight. The victim stated that a fight had broken out and shots were fired. The deputies cleared the crowd and the group moved to the Huddle House. No other information was given. [Full Story »]

The Appling County Board of Commissioners held their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, June 21 at the Appling County Courthouse Annex beginning at 5:30 p.m. During the meeting the commissioners approved the purchase of a Georgia Easyvote System to be used by the registrars office.
