Frances Elizabeth McLemore, 99, of Vidalia, died Friday, July 29, 2011 in Bethany Assisted Living in Vidalia. Mrs. McLemore was born April 23, 1912 in Appling County to the late Silas Malcolm Johnson and the late Letitia Sellers Johnson. She was a member of Surrency Baptist Church. Frances Elizabeth was a schoolteacher, artist and musician. Her husband, Carr McLemore, preceded her in death. [Full Story »] 

Laura Beth Lundy Wade, 76, died Thursday, July 28, 2011 in Wayne Memorial Hospital in Jesup. Mrs. Wade was born March 3, 1935 in Pike County, Kentucky to the late Ray Lundy and the late Thelma Hill Lundy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Elster Wade, a sister Judy Hunter and a brother, Peter Lundy. [Full Story »] 

Chief of Police James Godfrey reports that on July 26, at approximately 10:00 a.m., officers from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the Altamaha Drug Task Force, and the Baxley Police Department, served arrest warrants on the residents of 39 Waldon Street and 598 Fair Street. The warrants are a result of several months of undercover operations. [Full Story »]

During the regularly scheduled meeting of the Baxley City Council, held on July 26, council members discussed the airport hanger and operations. City Manager Jeff Baxley stated he had been approached by Robbie Gardner who desires to enter into a rental/lease agreement with the city for the use of the large blue and gray hangar at the airport that the city owns. On July 22, at approximately 4:26 a.m., the Baxley Fire Department responded to a house fire on Blackshear Highway. Investigation revealed that the fire was the result of arson. The State Fire Marshall was called to assist in the investigation. A reward up to $10,000.00 is offered for information that would lead to the arrest of person(s) that attempted to burn the house. It is with great pride that we welcome everyone to the new 2011-2012 school year in Appling County. This is truly and honor and privilege for me to open this new year for the first time as your Superintendent. I am looking forward to working with the students, teachers, parents, and community in all capacities. The focal point of this important work should rest on the Mission and Vision, which serves as a guide for our school system. Our Mission states, “We are committed to providing a quality education that promotes maximum individual achievement and social responsibility” and our Vision implies, “Appling County Schools will be a System of Excellence for All Learners”.
