Doris Irene Rentz Carter, 89, died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Mrs. Carter was born Dec. 8, 1921 in Appling County to the late Robert William and Mildred Mary Ann Mann Rentz. She was a member of the Memorial Free Will Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Doris was retired from Georgia Baptist Children’s Home with 28 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Clennon Carter, and two sisters and two brothers. [Full Story »]

Billy Joe Hoover, 65, died Monday, August 22, 2011 at Altamaha Healthcare Nursing Home in Jesup. Mr. Hoover was born Oct. 2, 1945 in Hampton, S.C. to the late Joe and Nell Sauls Hoover. Pauline Hartley Smith, 77, died Thursday, August 25, 2011. Pauline was born Nov. 2, 1933 to the late Daniel Harvey Hartley and the late Mattie Estell Gordon Hartley. She was a member of the Baxley Church of God where she was a member of the ladies ministries, Young at Heart and the 55 Club. Mrs. Smith won the hearts of all who knew her. Betty Ann Berger Dixon, 85, of Savannah, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born and reared in Athens, and attended local schools there. Betty and her beloved husband, Eugene moved to Savannah in 1973. She was a homemaker and a member of The Cross Road Baptist Church. [Full Story »]

Melissa Eileen Flowers, 50, of St. Mary’s, GA, passed away August 23, 2011 at Hospice of the Golden Isles.

A Celebration of her life was held on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 4:00 p.m. at Kingsland First United Methodist Church with the Rev. W.A. (Chip) Strickland, Jr., officiating.

Pirates open season with shutout win over Dodge Co.

The Appling County Pirates opened the regular season on Friday, August 26 against the Dodge County Indians at Jimmy Swain Stadium. The Pirates were able to get the win 20-0 and will travel to face neighboring Wayne County Yellow Jackets on Friday, September 2 with the game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 28-28 tie with Windsor Forest. This week the Appling Christian Academy Eagles traveled to Griffin to play Skipstone Academy Warriors. Kick off started at 7:30 p.m. with the temperature at 100 degrees. The Eagles were low on players, dressing out only 13 players. The Warriors had 17 players and had size to their advantage. The game was long and hot, but the Eagles came out with a 42-8 win. The 2011 Georgia reapportionment/redistricting process has been interesting for Appling County to say the least. First the county and the City of Baxley were literally split in half in state house redistricting and now, according to the proposed congressional districts map released by the joint Georgia Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Committee, Appling will be moved out of the First Congressional District that is represented by U.S. Representative Jack Kingston (R - Savannah). The map shows the county could be in the 12th Congressional District, which is represented by U.S. Representative John Barrow (D - Savannah). [Full Story »] 

Black named JP Associates Teacher of the Year for 2012

Elaine Black, a special education teacher from Appling County Elementary School has been named the JP Associates Teacher of the Year for 2012. JP Associates is an International Consulting Firm that has worked with Appling County teachers for eight years. Ms. Black was chosen out of all the sites that the firm works with and received the award in Atlanta this July.
