Roy D. Greene, Sr., 88, died Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2011 in Appling Healthcare System. Roy was born Sept. 5, 1923 in Dodge County and had resided in Baxley since 1977. His son, Roy, Jr. related the following information about his father. Roy D. Greene, Sr. grew up poor in Georgia. He was a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. He was very successful in sales and as a business owner throughout his life. He was owner/president of a company he founded, “Truk Info. Inc.” until his passing. Hattie Elizabeth Stone McNeal, 87, of Graham, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. Mrs. McNeal was born in Atlanta but lived most of her life in Jeff Davis County. She was the daughter of the late Snow Luella Stone Rowell and the wife of the late Edward David McNeal. Mrs. McNeal was preceded in death by a son, Michael David McNeal and a brother, Shirley Stone. Charles Randall Lovett, 57, of Sylvester, died Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011 at St. Vincent Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. He was born Jan. 11, 1954 in Jeff Davis County and had resided in Sylvester for the last 22 years. Imogene Carter Mincey, 67, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at her residence. Mrs. Mincey was a native of Appling County. She was born August 18, 1944 to the late Emmett Carter and Elizabeth Carter. Thomas D. Stewart, Sr., 91, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 in Bacon County Hospital. Mr. Stewart was born July 24, 1920 in Ware County to the late William Warren Stewart and the late Maude Burns Stewart. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Baxley Kiwanis. Thomas was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Navy and was the owner of Stewart and Associates. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nell Veal Stewart. [Full Story »]

Judge Anthony Harrison opened indictments in Appling County Superior Court Sept. 6. There were 30 subjects that appeared in Appling County Superior Court. Listed are the subjects that were indicted.

Pirates Open Region Play With Win Over Herons

The Appling County Pirates hosted the Brantley County Herons on Friday, September 16 in the Region 2AA opener for both teams. The Pirates were able to overcome a slow start and pick up the win 26-13. With the win the Pirates improve to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in region play. The Pirates will be off this week and will resume play as they travel to Toombs County (0-4, 0-1) on Friday, September 30. The game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. [Full Story »] 

Eagles defeat Cougars 58-8

This past week Appling Christian Academy Eagles traveled to Hardeeville, South Carolina to play the Abundant Life Cougars. It was perfect weather for football and the Eagles played a great game. They came out with a 58 to 0 victory. This was the first time in Eagle history that they beat the Cougars in South Carolina. [Full Story »]

Land deal abandoned by authority

Last Tuesday, September 6, the Baxley/Appling County Development Authority held a called meeting to again address the potential purchase of land. As reported last week, the authority had entered into an agreement to purchase a tract of land located just off Highway 341 East, near Swain Break Road. However, last Tuesday the authority again voted on the land (known as the Stewart/Rayonier tract) and as a result the members decided to abandon the purchase of the property. [Full Story »]
