Mark Webster, 43, of Surrency, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2012. Mark was born Sept. 26, 1968 in Spartanburg, S.C. He was a United States Navy Veteran and was a member of the U. S. Military Vets. Webster was employed by Boilermakers Local 26 of Savannah. [Full Story »] 

Undercover work nets drug dealers

According to Baxley Police Chief James Godfrey, officers from the Baxley Police Department and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office assisted officers from the Altamaha Drug Task Force and the G.B.I. in serving several arrest warrants on offenders who had sold illicit drugs to undercover agents. Judge E.M. Wilkes, III opened indictments on sixteen subjects in Appling County Superior Court on Jan. 13. The following were indicted as follows:

Dara Zacher – Burglary.

Wesley Glynn Rentz – Burglary and theft by taking, two counts. [Full Story »] 

Sheriff Benny Deloach would like to report the following incidents handled by deputies with the Appling County Sheriff’s Department.

On January 12, answered a call on Herrington Road in reference to a theft. Taken were some old boards off of an old house without permission. Boards were worth about $100.00. Investigation continues.

Jan. 13, answered a call on Tupelo Circle in reference to harassment. The complainant stated that several neighborhood children had been walking by her residence and calling her dog out to the road. The dog follows the children off. Complainant stated that she just wanted the children to leave the dog alone. [Full Story »] 

Appling County Pirate football player Byron Buxton was named to two Class AA All-State teams. Buxton was named to the All-State team picked by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) as a first team defensive back. Buxton was also named to the first team Class AA All-State team picked by the Georgia Sportswriters Association as a wide receiver. This marks that first time that a Pirate player, in recent history, has been named to a first team all-state team on both sides of the ball. [Full Story »] 

Appling County Elementary School was announced to be a 2011 Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) Award Winning School. ACES has received the Silver Award for Greatest Gain for Students Meeting and Exceeding Standards. [Full Story »] 

The Appling County Recreation Department will be having softball and baseball registration. The registration for T-Ball for children ages five and six and Mini Mite (ages seven and eight) will be held Feb. 27 through March 10. [Full Story »] 

The Appling County Pirate basketball team (9-8 overall, 4-7 Region 2AA) started the week hosting the Tattnall County Battle Creek Warriors (10-9, 8-3) on Tuesday, January 17 but were not able to pick up the win losing 63-74.

The Pirates second contest of the week would have the Pirates hosting the number two ranked Vidalia Indians (18-2, 11-1) with the Pirates losing 53-77. [Full Story »] 

The Appling County Lady Pirates (8-10 overall, 3-9 Region 2AA) hosted the Tattnall County Lady Warriors (13-4, 11-2) on Tuesday, January 17 but were not able to pick up the win losing 28-54.

The Lady Pirates would host the Vidalia Lady Indians (10-7, 7-5) on Friday, January 20 with the Lady Pirates losing 41-56. [Full Story »]

A group formed to orchestrate the return to Georgia of a ceremonial sword meant for a Columbia County native and War of 1812 hero has raised nearly enough money to purchase it from a private collector.

It will cost $100,000 to buy the Appling Sword, an elaborate ceremonial blade commissioned by the Georgia Legislature in 1814 to be presented to Lt. Col. Daniel Appling. [Full Story »]
