There’s nothing nuanced about Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens’ understanding of the state’s “open meetings” law - and that’s a good thing.

Outside of some exceptions - most notably regarding acquisition of real estate, discussion of some legal matters and the hiring and firing of employees - state law is abundantly and unequivocally clear as to when local governmental entities must open their proceeding to the public. [Full Story »]

Mayport, Florida is in Duval County, in the Jacksonville metro area. The community name derives from the “River of May” the French name for the Saint Johns River. Mayport is primarily the homeport for a large U. S. Navy fleet. However, there are other interests there including deep-sea fishing boats. B. J.’s and my interest on this particular trip was a deep-sea fishing trip with our friends Donald and Jerri Lewis. [Full Story »]

Samuel “Jimmy” Carter, Jr., 68, of Toombs County, Lyons, died Saturday, April 30, 2011 at his residence. Mr. Carter was born May 24, 1942 in Appling County to the late Sam Wiley Carter, Sr. and the late Alla Mae Herrin Carter. He was a member of Satilla Freewill Baptist Church in Hazlehurst. Jimmy was in the United States Air Force and served as an Aircraft Jet Engine Mechanic. He was retired as a senior sawmill supervisor for New South Inc. in Cassatt, S.C. and was a member of Miliken’s Creek Masonic Lodge #302 F&AM in Cedar Crossing. Jimmy was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Carter. [Full Story »]
