Sheriff Benny DeLoach would like to report the following activity of the Appling County Sheriff’s Office.

On June 1, answered a call to Earl Cauley Road in reference to a domestic dispute. A complainant stated that a known offender came to her residence and threatened to burn her house down and kill everyone inside. The complainant was advised to see the magistrate judge. [Full Story »]

Larry and I enjoy working in our yard and gardens, but I don’t tolerate the gnats very well. A few up my nose, in my eyes, and in my ears will chase me right back inside on the double. Their abundance this summer is daunting, to say the least. The grandchildren are visiting, and living above the gnat line, they are even less tolerant than I of these pests. [Full Story »]

As I grow older I realize that my memory is just not what it used to be. I have a good recollection of certain events but there are usually no faces attached to that memory unless the event was memorable.
Sometimes someone from my past, for instance an old school mate, will come up to me and stare into my face saying, “remember me?” When they do this I instantly realize I am supposed to know them and I know this has happened to some of you if you are past sixty. When I cannot recognize them it is embarrassing and I will say something like “it’s coming to me. Give me a minute.” Most times it will come to me and if not they will usually say something or start talking about an event they think I will remember, but as I have already stated, if the event was not memorable I generally cannot recall it and I have to apologize and go from there. Members continue to discuss budget

The Appling County Board of Education met on May 31 at the Appling County High School Fine Arts Center to discuss the FY 2011 - 2012 budget. During the discussion Superintendent Scarlett Copeland and CFO Adrienne Taylor shared that since last year’s budget the board has made adjustments through attrition, transfers, and other cost-saving measures to make up for a deficit of $1,139,898.00. Taylor stated that at the current millage rate of 15 mills, the board would fall short of having a balanced budget in the amount of $413,733.84. Copeland recommended that board members consider reducing the work calendar schedule by seven days, which would result in saving the system approximately $473,000.00 and balance the budget. The cut would only apply to certified personnel, not classified and Pre-k teachers who have already experienced cuts last year and for this upcoming year. Copeland stated that they are trying to make cuts as evenly as possible. [Full Story »]

Ruby Brantley Bland, 92, died Friday, May 27, 2011 in the Dublinair Nursing Home in Dublin. Mrs. Bland was born Sept. 30, 1918 in Jeff Davis County to the late Lott Warren Brantley, Sr. and the late Lilly Herrington Brantley. She was a member of Dunn Memorial Baptist Church. Mrs. Bland was preceded in death by her husband, Garland B. Bland; a stepmother, Alice “Doll” Herrington Brantley and three sisters, Gertrude B. Collins, Opal B. Ray and Inez Fleming. Deward Gerrell Elkins, 63, of Hazlehurst, died Friday, June 3, 2011. Mr. Elkins was born in Hazlehurst. He was the son of the late Deward Erastus Elkins and Janet Ruth Cobb Elkins. Mr. Elkins was a veteran of the United States Marines and was wounded in action twice in Vietnam. He received a Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. Mr. Elkins was the owner/operator of Gerrell Elkins Cabinets. He was preceded in death by a son, Chad Elkins. [Full Story »]

Jimmy E. Mayers, 74, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011 at his residence. He was born July 17, 1936 in Appling County to the late K. C. Mayers and the late Mymie Hall Mayers and had resided here all of his life. Mr. Mayers was self-employed as a carpenter and was a member of Zoar Baptist Church. He was the past president and chairman of the Altamaha Soil Conservation and was the past master of Holmesville Masonic Lodge 195. Elmira H. Miles, 84, died Monday, May 30, 2011 at the Pavilion. Ms. Miles was born Sept. 21, 1926 in Alma to the late James Frank Heyman and the late Nanette Waters Heyman and had lived in Baxley most of her life. She was the owner and operator of AAA Propane Gas, Inc. at 18 Anthony Street, Baxley. Elmira was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. E. Miles. The following are highlights of incidents that were handled by officers of the Baxley Police Department.

On April 30 at approximately 4:00 a.m., met with a resident at a Fair Street address in reference to a domestic dispute. On arrival the residents told officers that they had got into an argument that turned into a gun being pulled and the female resident being threatened. Arrested in connection with this incident was Norris Gibbs, Jr., 54, of Surrency, on charges of one count each of pointing a pistol/gun at another and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
