Appling School system moved to Accredited Warned

A monitoring team for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) visited the Appling County School System on June 19 - 21. Since August 2010 the system has been on “Probation” with the SACS, which is one step from losing accreditation. Following the June 19 - 21 visit, the team issued a new report that states that the system has moved one step closer to totally regaining its coveted accreditation moving to a status of now “Warned”. Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp visited Baxley and spoke at the South Georgia Republican Luncheon on July 6 as part of his campaign promise to attend at least one GOP event each month. Kemp spoke to the crowd of around thirty Republicans about how the Secretary of State’s office has made cuts, and how it has improved. [Full Story »]

July 1, answered a call to Beatrice Lane in reference to damage to property. A complainant stated she and the known offender got into an argument and the offender damaged the complainant’s vehicle. [Full Story »]

Required: fitted crib sheet, towel or small blanket (please keep in mind the size of our cubbies when choosing covers; a beach towel will work well.), Book bag (large enough to keep a folder and covers in) and a change of clothes (please place in a Ziploc with name on the bag). Make sure your child’s name is on all items with a permanent marker.

Man drowns trying to swim across Altamaha

On July 2, at 5:40 p.m., Appling County 911 received a call in reference to a drowning at the Altamaha River near Plant Hatch. Witnesses stated to investigating officers that Johnny Ray Adams, a white male age 45, attempted to swim the river from the Toombs County side to the Appling County side and that Adams went under on the Appling County side and did not resurface. High school track facility approved

The Appling County Board of Education voted to move forward with the construction of a new track facility adjacent to the high school baseball/softball fields at its Monday, June 27 meeting. In addition to approving the track, board members also approved a request to go ahead and build restroom and concession facilities at the new track. Maintenance and Operations Director Winton Herrin explained that he had received requests from the administration at the high school as well as a number of citizens to build the additional facilities, adding that they were a part of the original design. Herrin estimated that the cost to build the additional facilities would cost approximately $100,000.00. He also explained that there would be no cost added back to the overall project since the board had saved in a number of other areas, including saving approximately $800,000.00 in site prep for the new Pre-K facility. The Southern Conference announced that Mackenzie Williams, of Baxley has been named to its 2011 Academic All-Conference Spring Season Team. The Georgia Southern Eagle Softball team produced the most honorees with six selections, which included starting infielder Williams, a junior majoring in modern languages. [Full Story »]

NBC’s attack on America’s heritage

Many Americans are aware that NBC deliberately cut out the reference to Under God during a broadcast segment of the Pledge of Allegiance during the recent U.S. Open in Washington. NBC responded to the flood of criticism by offering what can only be described as a non-apology apology. NBC has continued to ignore inquiries as to why or how the pledge was edited. NBC, which broadcast on the public airwaves, has also refused to make amends for their disrespect of the pledge and the tens of thousands of Americans who have served our nation in uniform. The Kentucky Wonder beans are canned, the garlic dried and put up, the potatoes are keeping well, and the tomatoes are ready for canning.

This leaves me with the okra and what a job it has turned into. I am not one to waste the bounty of the garden I have worked so hard to have what with the drought and hot weather, so the okra must not be wasted. It has become somewhat comical, though, when I go up to a neighbor’s house with a bag of the fresh okra to give away. They have got to where they won’t answer the door. I guess they are as tired of the okra as I am. I have pickled it, stewed it, fried it, boiled it, and have taken to eating it raw if it is small and tender. I wish it would stop bearing, but it won’t. You can literally see it grow. Like any weed, it loves chicken manure. If anyone wants a mess, they can come and get it, please. [Full Story »]
