According to Chief James Godfrey on January 22 at approximately 3:54 p.m., officers of the Baxley Police Department and the Appling County Sheriff’s Office answered a call to 660 Orange Street in reference to a fight in progress. While the officers were in route to the call, they received further information about shots being fired and someone being shot. On arrival officers secured the scene and assisted EMS with a gunshot victim. After a brief investigation, officers discovered that a domestic argument had taken place, which escalated to the point that a firearm was pulled and discharged striking Anthony Martin, 30, of Baxley, in the face area. Martin was treated at the scene and then transported to Appling HealthCare System. He was later transferred to Memorial in Savannah by life flight for his injuries he sustained during the incident.
During an Appling County Board of Education (BOE) meeting, held on January 21, the resignation of Erica Pinkney, School Food Service Director, was unanimously accepted. Days after the meeting The Baxley News-Banner received numerous calls from concerned citizens about the possibility of misappropriation of funds related to the area of school food service.
The News-Banner spoke to Superintendent Scarlett Copeland about the issue and was informed that the school system is currently performing audits in this area. It was also reported that Pinkney had been placed on administrative leave prior to her resignation.

We chase all the tangible things—money, land, cars, jewelry, etc. We struggle to hold on to our youth and beauty via the purchase of plastic surgery and infinite beauty products. Those things make us happy, or so we think. Why does it take us so long to learn what truly makes us happy?
